Today on CNN, host Wolf Blitzer asked now-GOP frontrunner Herman Cain — who’s not exactly a student of foreign policy — if he thought Netanyahu made the right choice. While Cain said he doesn’t know all the facts of the case, he said, “On the surface, you would say ‘one for hundreds, doesn’t make any sense.’” Blitzer then asked if he’d make a similar deal if he were president, and Cain said he would:
BLITZER: Could you imagine if you were president…and there were one American soldier who had been held for years and the demand was al Qaeda or some other terrorist group, “You got to free everyone at Guantanamo Bay” – several hundred prisoners at Guantanamo. Could you see yourself as president authorizing that kind of transfer?
CAIN: I could see myself authorizing that kind of transfer but what I would do is I would make sure that I got all of the information. I got all of the input, considered all of the options. And then, the president has to be the president and make a judgment call. I can make that call if I had to.

Here I thought that the Republicans were supposed to be the ones that are hard on terrorists. This guy's an idiot! How many servicemen died to put those prisoners in Gitmo? He would throw away their sacrifice for a single soldier? He's simply not fit to be a leader.

Really? I don't agree with Netanyahu's decision, but I don't reject him or Cain's opinion out of hand.
Would you have done more to free our MIA's and POW's after the Vietnam war? I don't know what needed to be done to free more of our prisoners but I think it was a real shame that Kissinger abandoned them.

Of course I would have done more to free MIA's and POW's AFTER THE WAR, but that's is a whole different ball of wax. In case you haven't noticed, we are still at war with al Qaeda and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. Cain, in his casual response, said he would be prepared to release ALL the prisoners in Gitmo in exchange for one soldier. That includes Khalid Sheikh Muhammad in case you've forgotten who we have pigeonholed down there. It was a blunder of unimaginable proportions and, IMO, makes him unfit for the nomination. I assume that's why Wayne's on the Cain boat now, because he just gave the Dems a VERY large stick to beat him with. I would like to see Obama beat next November, but if Cain's the nominee, I don't think it will happen.

I favor a gps chip and release program. Once they are dispersed into their respective terrorist communities, send them a gps guided missile.

I wonder if that is what is what Israel did.

"blunder of unimaginable proportions"? More hyperbole? Eric Holder was willing to release all the Gitmo detainees if a civvie jury deemed them innocent before they caught a clue and went back to Cheney's military tribunals.

Like I said, I think Israel made a mistake trading one for over 1000, but I don't think doing it in their case or the US doing it would be a game changer.

Good to know that some care so little for the lives lost capturing and detaining all of the gitmo prisoners that they think it would not be a big deal to jusr release them.

Like Obama planned?

Gitmo is a real quagmire without easy answers. It sounds like a lot of the inmates don't deserve to be there and should be released, but often these innocents are so bitter after years spent behind razor wire that they do become terrorists after being released. Or Al Quiada recruits them with big paychecks and uses them to recruit new members.

From the Talmud (not the Bible/Torah)

Whosoever preserves a single soul of Israel, Scripture ascribes to him as if he had preserved a complete world (Tractate Sanhedrin 37a).

(no - it's not really biblical mandate - but it's consistent with the teachings of the Torah - which can be found in the Bible).

Getting back to Cain -- he has a strong, powerful presence. He's got enough charisma to challenge President Obama, too.

I don't think he'll build a sense of confidence in America, and I don't really think he's a solution for the country.
