Where do we draw the line? These parents named their children Adolf Hitler Campbell, JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell, and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell. The children were taken into state custody and the parents were charged with child abuse.
I am having a difficult time wrapping my mind around this situation. Can the potential harm committed against these children be couterbalanced by the potential additional harm committed against them by the fostercare system of the state?
The parents cannot possibly love these children. They have condemned their kids to a life of hardship because of their handles. The taboo names also will most probably warp the childrens' concepts of themselves with results that will cause problems to them and society.
Taking them away from the parents and placing them into the foster system will not "fix" anything, but will compound the problem.
Is there a fix for this situation? Can it be undone? I would really like to hear some thoughtful discussion on this news item.
Parents Who Gave Children Nazi-Inspired Names Fighting to Regain Custody
By: Allison Berry
Heath and Deborah Campbell, of Holland Township, N.J., vaulted to public notoriety in 2008 when Deborah's request for a birthday cake with her son Adolf Hitler's name written in icing was denied by the local ShopRite. In January 2009, upon allegations of abuse and incompetent parenting, Adolf, along with siblings JoyceLynn Aryan Nation and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie, were taken into protective custody by the state. The children have been living in foster care ever since.
The Campbells say that last month they were cleared by New Jersey's Family Court of any charges of abuse, and maintain that their children were taken away solely because of their given names. New Jersey court officials have not issued any comment.
In August 2010, an appeals court found that there was evidence of domestic violence in the household, which the Campbells have denied (despite a gag order intended to prevent both sides from speaking out to the press). Both parents are unemployed and are said to suffer from unnamed physical and mental disabilities.
I would let them have their kids back if the names are the only reason they were taken. I have known some older men who were given the name Adolf or Adolph, born before Hitler became infamous name and they got around it. Or the kids could just change their name when older or go by a nickname now.
Thomas Sowell: There are no solutions, just trade-offs.
My strong impulse is to take the parents around back of the barn and beat the living crap out of them! That would not solve anything. Taking the kids away does not solve anything.
Putting the kids in the national spotlight does not solve anything.
Maybe if some responsible relative would sue for guardianship and adoption, then they could begin the process of legally changing their names. BEFORE THEY ARE PERMANENTLY PSYCHOLOGICALLY SCARRED.
My grandfather on my mom's side had the middle name Adolph and was born before Hitler. It was a popular German name. Obviously the parents wished to express their beliefs through their children's names. Here are some more not so thoughtful names.

I knew a woman named "Thursday's Child" and a man named "Bird". These names did not cause people to sneer at them. And these people were not ashamed because there was no association of their names with evil and repulsion.
