Meanwhile in Ohio, more companies will move down to the sun belt with non-union private and goverment employers.
Wow, since the referendum only applied to public workers, teachers, firemen, etc., you REALLY think that companies will move south because of public worker's rights?
You need to get back on your meds....
Who is going to pay for these cadillac pension plans? Taxpayers, both personal and corporations.
I am orignally from Ohio and my relatives who own businesses there have been moving them over the past 20 years down south and west. It isn't a friendly climate for corporations. There was some optimism with the new governor, but now there is one more nail in the coffin for manufacturing in the Buckeye state.

Yeah, being able to negotiate your wages, pension and benefits with the person you put in office (who will be happy to give you whatever you want if you put them back in office) makes a lot of sense.
Hmmm...wonder why pensions are so underfunded for public employees? At least we know that those of us who work in the private sector will be forced to pony up a ton of $$ to make sure the public employees get these benefits!! Glad I'm not a kid today! They are the ones who are gonna have to pay for this!
I would say there is likely a recall election in the immediate future for the Mayor of Detroit. This man has A LOT of nerve making tough choices and trying to balance the budget of his city. If recent history is any guide...then this guy must face a recall election don't you think?
Facing a $45 million cash shortfall, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing announced Friday the city would eliminate 1,000 positions by the end of February.
The layoffs represent 9% of the city's workforce and will save Detroit about $14 million. Notices will go out starting the week of Dec. 5.
If the mayor's proposal is not approved, Detroit will "100%" file for bankruptcy, he said. If the city fails to overhaul its budget, it's not a matter of if ... it's when.
I'm tellin' you. This guy hasn't "read the memo". Telling the truth in a Blue state is going to get you canned. All Mayor Bing has to do is look at what is happening in Wisconsin. Some nerve he has trying to keep his city solvent. The Governor of Wisconsin tried and they want him tarred and feathered.
Yeah, it would have been even worse for Walker if what he was doing would have actually had any real effect on the budget, instead of simply taking away bargaining rights for employees.

Really? You don't think getting rid of the ability for corrupt politicians to hand out raises to unions, in order to be supported in the next election won't help the budget?
Too bad future generations aren't here to see all the great things we are spending their $$ on!!
I know this thread is about Ohio and its woes but the broader picture is as this news article suggests, "States in Crisis".
This Detroit mayor must be out of his mind. He is actually trying to retain the solvency of his city. What the hell is wrong with this guy?

"Solving our cash crisis requires a combination of concessions and tough cuts," said Bing, who has eliminated 2,000 positions since he took office in 2009. "Layoffs will be strategic. We will limit the impact on residents, protecting core services like police and fire protection as much as we can."
Also, the mayor ordered a hiring freeze for all civil service positions other than in the water and sewerage department.
This madman seems to understand that in the end, local/city, state and federal governments have some basic responsibilities. In his case he recognizes the fundamental importance of police and fire, sewer and water. I don't understand what makes this guy think that the people of Detroit expect their executive to lead, find compromise and keep their city afloat. Shouldn't this guy be campaigning or something like that?
I'm telling you, he has to be insane and clearly doesn't care about the prospect of his reelection. What's wrong with this guy?
It's one thing to have to reduce the size of the workforce... Cities do that all the time. It's something else again to impose the loss of collective bargaining rights on employees who have those rights under law. Unions and union-membership is not a crime...In fact, it's a protected right... (As Scott Walker found out... But he'll be out after January... Maybe then he can look back on it and realize why he's out.)
