The protests go by a variety of names: "Occupy Wall Street," "American Autumn," "The 99 Percent." And the lack of a unified message is matched by a lack of centralized control. But the protests share a common spark: a disillusioned Canadian adman.

The Occupy protests seemed to come out of nowhere. But the early participants, like John Garcia in downtown Seattle, point to a very specific catalyst.

"I get Adbusters, so that's how I heard about it," he says.

Adbusters is an anti-consumerism magazine based in Vancouver, British Columbia. This summer, it proposed a Sept. 17 "occupation" of Wall Street, and the idea caught fire.

Adbusters doesn't claim any control over the protests. It wouldn't give NPR an interview, for instance, for fear of overshadowing the movement. It sees itself more as an idea shop, sort of an "anti-advertising firm" that takes special glee in creating fake ads to subvert the message of real products.

I've just decided that this forum needs some balance. I've only been here a few weeks and I noticed that LJ spends all her time posting vile little hateful comments so I have taken up the task of counterbalancing her rhetoric. Don't thank me, I know, it's a thankless job but someone has to do it. And it keeps me from coming down with Alzheimer's

So your unbalanced views and comments are supposed to bring this forum INTO balance? I though LJ's comments were already counter balancing the puke that the righties here post on an hourly basis. Alrighty Dr. Philban, have fun with that. It's good to know this for understanding your future posts.

Watch videos of the OWS protests and now the riots in response to the Paterno firing. One thing stands out, over emotional college age idealists that can't and don't express why they are doing these things. When they try, it sounds like spoiled brats shouting gimme, gimme more.

Dude, a smaller and more financially responsible Federal Government that does't attempt to continue exceeding it's purpose is a short and succinct statement. Where is the mystery in that statement?
