America is addicted to oil. President George Bush said so… and now that phrase is echoed everywhere. But are we really “addicted”?

Our daily lives are dripping in oil. It’s in virtually everything we use and fuels everything we do. To be sure, it is something to worry about. Are we going to run out? Aren’t we fighting wars for oil? But, if we do slow the flow, how will that change the way we live?

When it comes to what we’re told about oil, there’s rhetoric and then there’s reality. Who can we believe? The media? Politicians? Environmental activists? You’d be surprised.

For nearly ten years, journalist turned media analyst MARK MATHIS has studied our use of oil. And what he found shocked him so thoroughly that he made a movie about the misinformation, distortions and even outright lies about oil.

We do have an “oil problem” in America (and the world), but it’s not what you’ve been told. So, it’s time to Fill Up on Truth… for a change.

Do you use a computer or cell phone?
Do you enjoy air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?
Do you enjoy eating bananas, pineapples, pears, cherries and mangos throughout the year?
Is there paint on your walls?
Do you have walls?
Do you have indoor plumbing, a refrigerator and an oven?
Do you cook your food with anything other than wood or dung?
Do you sleep on a mattress?
Have you ever taken any medications or visited a doctor or dentist?
Have you visited other states or nations?
Do you drive a car?
Do you watch TV go to movies, play video games or read books?
Do any of your clothes come from other nations?
Have you ever had the time to ponder the meaning of life?
Do you earn enough money so that you can enjoy weekends or take vacations?
Do you support the research and development of non-fossil fuel energy sources?
Do you want a cleaner planet?

If you answered “yes” to all of these questions then you fall into the “spoiled” category. Every aspect of the activities and desires mentioned above are directly connected to the production and use of oil. There are billions of people who would LOVE to be able to say yes to all of the questions above, but they can’t because their daily reality is different than yours.

I am betting even solar and wind energy are dependent on petrol. Need lube for your wind equipment? Plastic for your sollar collection system?

If I want truth, I'll wait for the Michael Moore version... which will be coming soon.

Of course we have a problem, and of course it's pervasively used in everything. The challenge will be to get it out of products that it doesn't really need to be in (like chapstick), because workable substitutes are possible (and every little reduction in use adds up), and to drastically decrease uses which are a luxury (and everyone's definition of luxury will be different, but lifestyle changes are inevitable) or can be outmoded with new technology. We absolutely aren't going to be able to go cold turkey on oil, and of course we aren't going to run out anytime soon, but we can start using it with more conscientiousness and care for our planet and ourselves. The problem is that we use it with reckless abandon and no regard as to the consequences of our thoughtlessness.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

Overuse of petrol products? Maybe the key isn't a highway gas tax, but a import duty on petroleum, maybe 10%.
Might encourage American producers to explore alternatives.

But I think the real bugaboo is how many countries subsidize diesel and gasoline to help out their poor. (Indirect welfare?)
The surest way to start a riot in poor countries is to attempt to raise the price of subsidized food or petrol.
