There really IS someone worse than Jimmy Carter?

Wow... When asked to choose the worst president in the history of America, a familiar name comes to mind. Even Democrats will remember the years of gas lines, energy shortages, inflation, unemployment, and hostages. I'm talking about the 39th president of the United States: Jimmy Carter. But now, a new report by Gallup reveals that Barack Obama has journeyed into Carter-like territory. In the history of their polling, no one has had a lower approval rating at this point in a presidential term than Obama.

Carter is looking good now. In the wake of bad times, he made things better for industry by deregulating airlines etc. He had goverment cutting back, flying coach, Obama just continues to try and spend his way out. We are going to run out of money way before we run out of recession.

Gas lines - product of the OPEC embargo - which was triggered by Nixon's decision to support Israel.
Inflation -- product of US decision to remove the dollar peg to gold (a Nixon policy)
Unemployment - the highest years for unemployment (according to BLS) would be 1982 and 1983 (Reagan years)
Hostages - okay - credit goes to Carter.......

Carter's failure was a failure to have faith in the institution of government. (a problem, today). Statistically, Carter's approval rating isn't all that different from Ford's.

It has little to do with policies - it's confidence in institutions. Carter's successor, Reagan didn't have confidence in institutions, either - he exploited those sentiments to promote ideas that were actually very different than his policies.

That said - faith in Obama (or any member of the red-tie cult) is mis-placed.

He's not going to solve any problems - but as long as he keeps smiling - everything's going to be allright.

President Obama's periodic approval rating has dropped - but his average approval rating remains fairly high. I suppose that signals some vulnerability from an election perspective. Maybe Hillary will decide she's Republican (that might work!).

Curiously, the most consistently high approval ratings - go to JFK and Eisenhower - not coincidentally - a time in history when confidence in institutions was relatively high.

It's normal for presidential approval ratings to drop over time. Only two (2) presidents in recent history were able to raise their approval ratings as their tenure in office increased: FDR and Clinton.
