Let’s be clear about this: Somewhere along the line, this country stopped being a meritocracy and instead became a Confederacy of Dunces to use another Swiftian phrase: "When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him," wrote Swift.
We didn’t get into a debt problem in this country because we needed the money; we didn’t meltdown the housing market because homeownership is less important now than it was 30 years ago; we didn’t make a wreck of healthcare because healthcare delivery is very different today than it has ever been.
Instead, all we have done is let the dunces confederate against the genius of America.
We’re surrounded by those dunces, in the UN, in Congress, on Wall Street, in the White House, the state house, in think tanks, in associations, in non-profits.
