what is Gingrich's fascination with poor children?

None of which addresses the questions I raised. Why shouldn't we expect those receiving public welfare money to put in a little time decreasing the total cost of government? Why can't an unemployed worker put a day in filling in potholes, or an evening mopping the floors of the public buildings to lower the cost of government for the rest of the citizens of their state? Shouldn't they be giving back for the support of the public safety net they are receiving? Hand up, not hand out, right? Wouldn't there be less damage to one's pride if some labor was performed in exchange for the subsidy?

I don't think the kids should be cleaning toilets just because they are poor

Maybe Gingrich is fascinated by poor kids because Obama's administration is making record amounts of the poor.
Food stamps? All time high.
Jefferson County Food Banks? Feeding record amounts.
Record amounts of extended unemployment benefits.

As I said - I agree with that sentiment. IMNTBHO it is the parents who are receiving the charity subsidy who should be doing the cleaning, not their children. It is due to the lack from the parents that the charity subsidy is necessary and it should be the parents who should give back to the rest with their labor when they need the public's assistance in taking care of their responsibilities. I'm not talking every night mind you, we have way too many on subsidy, even during good economic times, to make it a full time endeavor. One or two nights a month during the time they avail themselves of the safety net subsidy doesn't strike me as being an unreasonable request to make. Putting in a day of labor to fill in potholes once a month, or weeding the public flower beds during the summer months, or shoveling the snow in the winter, painting the exterior of buildings, removing graffiti in blighted neighborhoods........seems like not a lot to ask when the safety net is taken advantage of to keep their children clothed and fed when they are unable to provide those necessities themselves for whatever reason.
