Well put... And I agree with both of you... And I DO go out of my way to contribute to needy families and do RAK this time of year. (And I get to do it twice--once here in Colorado; and once in whatever state I happen to be working during the season.)
It's NOT about the "symbology", and if others would quite trying to make it so, we'd all be better off... The Spirit of giving doesn't require a belief in some formulaic narrative.
Just heard from a friend on fb about her RAK and how thrilled she was to be in a position to help. Seems a young father was trying to buy a couple of video games for his boys. After being informed that they were not on sale, he said that one would have to go back. My friend standing behind him in line, asked if they were gifts. He said they were for his boys. She responded that she would buy them. He started to walk away. She bought the games and give them to him. He was too shocked to speak, then started to shake her hand and finally ended up hugging her. It clearly meant a great deal to be able to give each boy a gift. Giving is so rewarding, especially when it is needed. A marvelous story. I'll keep it in mind as I go through all of next year.

Wasn't a failure... those who wanted to celebrate this wonderful time of the year won again. To bed... to bed... perchance to take up the mantle and fight again next year.
