Politifact Lie of the Year 2011 - GOP voted to end Medicare

20 Dec 2011 11:18 #1 by Reverend Revelant
Hehehehehehe....

Republicans muscled a budget through the House of Representatives in April that they said would take an important step toward reducing the federal deficit. Introduced by U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the plan kept Medicare intact for people 55 or older, but dramatically changed the program for everyone else by privatizing it and providing government subsidies.

Now, PolitiFact has chosen the Democrats’ claim as the 2011 Lie of the Year.

It’s the third year in a row that a health care claim has won the dubious honor. In 2009, the winner was the Republicans’ charge that the Democrats’ health care plan included "death panels." In 2010, it was that the plan was a "government takeover of health care."

Why is it easier to believe lies? Just tell the truth and let the voters choose. Sheesh.

Why is it permissible for the Congress to lie to the people but not for the people to lie to the Congress? Seems to me that if we want our politicians to tell us the truth we are going to have to hold them accountable through the same sort of sanctions they impose upon us when we lie to them.

Of course, one must remember the wisdom of Obi-Wan when contemplating such things:

Obi-Wan: "So what I told you was true... from a certain point of view."
Luke: "A certain point of view?!"
Obi-Wan: "Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view."

Nerd!

Just kidding.

It is like someone posted earlier, there are enough juicy tidbits of political truth out there, why lie?

Column from Krugman on the Politifact lie.

Politifact, R.I.P.

This is really awful. Politifact, which is supposed to police false claims in politics, has announced its Lie of the Year — and it’s a statement that happens to be true, the claim that Republicans have voted to end Medicare.

Steve Benen in the link above explains it, but let me just repeat the basics. Republicans voted to replace Medicare with a voucher system to buy private insurance — and not just that, a voucher system in which the value of the vouchers would systematically lag the cost of health care, so that there was no guarantee that seniors would even be able to afford private insurance.

The new scheme would still be called “Medicare”, but it would bear little resemblance to the current system, which guarantees essential care to all seniors.

Knock me over with a feather. A "progressive" says that the "progressive" lie isn't a lie at all.......wonders never cease.

What "Medicare" is today is a far cry from what it started out being as well. It started out being a program which reimbursed seniors instead of paying the health care providers directly - and it is still called "Medicare" even after that massive change in policy. The Republican plan again changes the manner, not the substance, of how the program is administered. It will still be a Ponzi based program whereby the current workers are paying taxes for the benefit of others as it is now. It will still be a program aimed at reducing or eliminating the costs associated with providing seniors with medical care, as it is now. It will still cost more than the taxes levied to pay for it can ever hope to equal, as it is now. Nothing in the substance of the program will change - which is why it is appropriately determined to be Politifacts "Lie of the Year".

Politifact is non-partisan... you and Krugman are partisan... yours and his denial of Politifact doesn't change the facts one iota. The information in the article stands on it's own. You and Krugman are sour apples. Tough sh*t.

Oh, I didn't say I agree with Krugman, nor did I say I disagreed with Politifact. I was just presented another opinion written by a NY Times writer. Tough sh*t, indeed.
