Right now, this month, retail will be firing thousands of temporary workers, and they will even be laying off thousands of part time workers until business picks up before Easter. This happens ever year... a lot of lower-on-the-seniority-ladder part time retail employees plan for a seasonal layoff every year at this time of year. We have 3 people in our family that are employed at various levels of retail, I know from experience.
Based on anecdotal evidence of increasing prices for raw materials and increased sales, I do think the economy is coming back. But these latest numbers need to continue lower for Obama to be comfortable about re-election. Plus there are still a number of dark clouds on the horizon like the Euro crisis.
