Like I said earlier, I didn't support the invasions of either country. But I am willing to say the occupations did some good. But I also have to agree with Martin, as soon as we depart Afghanistan, it will go back to the bronze age no matter how much we spent trying to improve their goverment and infrastructure.
Would the money have been better spent here? Probably. Personally I would have preferred even more if the money hadn't been spent and the debt levels increased.

Yeah....me too.....what we spent on the wars, what was squandered on an un-payed for medicare Part D program, and what we lost in revenue to the ill advised tax cuts by Bush, would have gone a long way in covering our ballooning debt......so, when the recession hit, the US might actually have had the resources to effectively fight it and our economy might not have gone into such a tail spin. This is just my opinion....but I was brought up to believe you put excess funds (surpluses, like Clinton left for Bush) aside for the inevitable rainy day, you don't spend them on gifts (like a tax cut no one really needed) and leave yourself cash poor when an economic storm hits.
One little correction, under Clinton/Gingrich we were projected to reach a surplus, but once you tell politicians there will be extra money, they will find a way to blow it and spend more than we have.
It is knid of nice having the reverse now, local and state goverments cut back spending so much because revenues were expected to be way down that some actually have surpluses.

Archer remember, Obama continued the Bush Tax Cuts, now he wants to cut benefits etc for the troops, but spend more money on weapon systems etc.
The other part to this, Obama as stated is doing this during election year. Imagine that, no surprize. What really pisses me off about this, is it is directed towards the men and women of the armed forces. I do not see or hear of anything towards congress, who get a raise unless they vote against it. I do not see cuts in other departments of our government, it is always let the military deal with it.
Can and should the DOD budget be cut, it can and should. Perfect example of where to start, I have said this many times. With the DOD contractors. If someone in normal business bids a job, and things go south, then they have to suck up the overruns. With government contractors, if thier bid is excepted and then because they did not bid correctly, the government has to suck up and pay the overruns. WRONG. Those contractors need to be held accountable. Here is a perfect example of the BS that contractors attempt to get away with.
