Wasserman-What? Broward congresswoman, ex-county commissioner in Wikipedia mixup
Broward congresswoman, ex-county commissioner not related, contrary to reports

News flash: Wikipedia isn't always correct.

The online encyclopedia's penchant for posting inaccuracies isn't helping U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston, whose parents are listed on Wikipedia as being two fallen public figures in Broward.

"She is the daughter of former Broward Commissioner Diana Wasserman-Rubin, and her stepfather is Richard Rubin," the entry about the congresswoman reads.

Wasserman-Rubin resigned from the Broward County Commission in 2010 and is facing trial on public corruption related charges, and Rubin, a former grants writer for Southwest Ranches, is serving a 10- month federal prison sentence for tax evasion.

Wasserman Schultz has a national profile as head of the Democratic National Committee, so conservative bloggers took the faux familial tie and ran with it.

Some of the headlines:

"DNC Chair's parents off to jail for corruption''

"The nut doesn't fall far from the tree: Debbie Wasserman-Schultz's parents involved in all kinds of skulduggery''

"Debbie's parents do Broward''

A caller to the Sun Sentinel on Tuesday asked why the relation between the two wasn't "a national story.'' He'd read about the mother-daughter kinship on the Internet.

Untruths can live on Wikipedia for a long time before they're corrected, according to the Wikipedia entry "reliability of Wikipedia.'' The entries are written and policed for mistakes by the public.

The Cuban-born Wasserman-Rubin said she carries the "Wasserman'' surname from her first husband, father of her two children (neither of which is in Congress).

"We are not related at all,'' she said. "… Not related with any connection whatsoever.''

Really? That blog you linked to, specfriggintacular, has no hints that it is satire. It seems to be pretty much a serious blog of a deranged person.

"Satire" is what you say when you get busted for posting a link to a phony story.

I thought it was down right funny, they were so intent on getting it out, they didn't look to see which wasserman they were hanging.

But it is fun to see the libs run around like mice trying to debunk it,,, you had to work for it.

So, you admit it wasn't satire...

I worked about 2.7 seconds... Which is all you would have had to work to find out that it was a phony story.

Thanks for admitting it.
