More scrutiny for Romney: Overseeing Marriott during years of kickback charges

Mitt Romney, who makes his hands-on business experience a talking point in his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, was a member of the board of directors and audit committee of a global company when it paid millions of dollars to settle charges of extracting kickbacks that cheated clients.

As a board member, Romney held oversight responsibilities at a time when Marriott was repeatedly accused of obtaining secret rebates that enriched Marriott, at the expense of hotel owners who had contracted with Marriott to run the hotels on their behalf. A series of owners also accused Marriott of falsifying financial statements to owners to conceal the arrangements—charges that Marriott had denied.

With law and business degrees from Harvard University, Romney was well-schooled in understanding the legal and business risks to the company from theses charges. Romney was one of the designated “independent,” members of the Marriott board, which meant that neither he nor his family were to have financial ties to the company. Indeed, no Romney had been an employee of Marriott or the company’s auditor.

On personal and political levels, however, bonds between the Romney and Marriott families run deep. The company founder J. Willard Marriott was close to Romney's father George. Both families are important in the Mormon Church. Romney was named Willard (the W. in his name), in Marriott's honor.

In 1994 the Marriott family gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to Romney's campaign for the U.S. Senate. In 2008, CEO J. Willard "Bill" Marriott, the founder's son, was national finance co-chair of Romney’s campaign for the Republican presidential nomination. Bill Marriott has so far donated $500,000 to Romney’s current campaign through the pro-Romney "super PAC," Restore Our Future, while his brother, Richard Marriott, has given the same.

My doodness... I'm glad there's a candidate with "business experience"...(and a 15% tax-rate...and offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands...) to act as a beacon for us in these troubling times...

These various questionable business adventures that Rommey has been part of are going to make it a bit hard for him to speak with authority against the socialist who want to turn this country into a social democratic collective.

Looks like Rick Perry will drop out in a few hours.

Romney and his wife have a net worth of between $190 and $250 million according to some- not that I take any part in the class envy like the lefties- this guy is not a conservative. He would not in my opinion be capable of representing hard working conservative values. He is an elitist and he is a RINO at best- and a "country club" republican just exactly like the Bush's.

BTW- Romney stated in his last debate that he would have signed the defense authorization act that Obama just signed that allows the military to arrest and detain American citizens without a trial.

It just amazes me how stupid we are- Romney will probably be the candidate- and he's the last guy I would have chosen. I won't be voting for Romney- he's not a conservative at all.

BTW- he never could have got my vote anyway- I could never vote for any politician who supports socialized health care and gun control legislation- but stating that he would have signed the defense authorization act tells me that he has no respect for our constitutional rights, and that's a deal breaker for me right there.

Romney and Obama are the same thing.

And in other breaking news about the corrupt Political Class in Washington...

Bain gives more campaign money to Democrats than it does to Republicans

Democrats have accepted more political donations than Republicans from executives at Bain Capital, complicating the left’s plan to attack Mitt Romney for his record at the private equity firm. During the last three election cycles, Bain employees have given Democratic candidates and party committees more than $1.2 million. The vast majority of that sum came from senior executives. Republican candidates and party committees raised over $480,000 from senior Bain executives during that time period.

If Obama wants to paint Romney as a corporate raider, the response should be why Obama and these Senators took money from the corporate raiders they claim to detest, assuming Romney wins the nomination. The Bain attack will likely be as big a flop in the general as it proved to be in the primaries.

The whole bunch of them... Romney, Obama, the left, the right... the only thing they are concerned with is the rape, pillaging and plundering of this country and the amount of money and power they can obtain. Anyone thinking otherwise is plain old stupid.

So you are going to pick instead the Newt that supports open marriage? Or the Santorum who plays with dead things? Or the Gary Johnson who supports marijuana? Or the Ron Paul who supports the KKK?

Will Romney support open borders since his dad was born in Mexico?

Maybe the Republicans are trying to throw the election...

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

Can you be more specific about what Romney did wrong with your 15% tax rate and Cayman Islands mention? I assume you can show how he cheated in some way? Or is it just talking points?
