How Fox News Is Destroying the Republican Party (Opinion)

<snip>

In terms of whipping up bouts of anti-Obama hysteria, the crass Fox approach enjoyed some short-term success. However, that same media movement is now three long and rhetorically repetitive years into its Obama crusade and trying to nominate a presidential candidate via an extended national campaign. According to more and more worried conservatives, the results on display are disastrous.

Of course, conservatives should have thought that through before handing over the reigns to Ailes and his misinformation minions. Indeed, none of this is unexpected. It's all entirely predictable. It's what happens when a mainstream political movement embraces a radical media strategy like the one being promoted by Fox News; the movement marches itself off a cliff.

Conservative leaders themselves have freely adopted Fox News' profoundly un-unprofessional rhetoric about Obama, claiming just this week he's "pro-poverty" and his politics are "almost un-American." That's the Fox-ification of the GOP.

Two years ago, despondent conservative and former Bush speechwriter David Frum, noting the sweeping power that Ailes was accumulating, observed that, "Republicans originally thought that Fox worked for us, and now we are discovering we work for Fox."

Dog was right... Tools....

The same parrots just disgorge and regurgitate the nightly FauxNews pablum every day...same buzzwords...same twisted logic....

Long article, but it nails it... Fox has now given the GOP and the Teabaggers exactly what they wanted...It's unelectable, and it's too late for do-overs, and they've virtually guaranteed Obama a second term. Now that the tools are "working for Fox", it's about time to reap what they've sown...

How do you know this? How often do you monitor them? I can imagine you watching Red eye every night taking notes.

I consider Fox News to be moderate right wing. Some of their talk show hosts are further to the right, like Hannity. But the most extreme no longer works for Murdoch, Glenn Beck, who went onto the internet. O'Reilly, is a populist conservative. Greta Van Sustern is as likely to talk about sex crimes as politics.

And the influence of Fox News on the GOP? McCain, considered to be a moderate Republican with a long history of working with Dems, won the nomination in 2008. And leading right now is the most liberal, Romney, who inspired Obamacare.

Sounds like Fox doesn't have much influence at all if you think they are forcing the Republicans to the right. All the conservative nominees are starting to fall by the wayside, Bachmann, etc.

Fox encourages the Republicans to vote for unelectable choices? The current leader Romney polls better nationally than Santorum or Gingrich against Obama.

So either Fox has no influence and the primary participants support Romney to get rid of Obama? Or Fox wants the lightweight conservative Romney.

Our current president did say that the $4 Trillion that was added to the deficit during the 8 year Bush administration was "unAmerican". Think he'll say the same about the $4 Trillion he's added during his administration over the last 3 years? Somehow I doubt that he will, how about you?

Pathetic. How does this add to this discussion?

Soulshiner, you have not been paying attention, this is how politics work on 285bound. Since we are all just debating how big we want our big govt to be there are no real issues to debate.

I think there is some truth to the article, but it does not matter, Romney is going to win the R ticket and he brought Obamacare to the people, he could not defend this concept last night. Seems like the #1 issue to conservatives is Obamacare, which sucks, like Romneycare, but there is no need for two names, they are the same program. So I think the republican party destroyed itself when it decided to be D jr. Like locally, all leaders call themselves republicans, but by the book and the philosophy they are Democrats. I don't think I have even heard anyone argue this. The same is true of Romney. I have a business in MA, I know what he is like. I dealt with his govt. It is no different than a democratic one.

Last night when asked why he is the candidate to beat Obama, he should have just told everyone to close their eyes and said "picture a muppet character of a news anchor or a politician" He then should have raised his arms, pointed both index fingers back at himself and said, "now open your eyes. Ehhhh"....because there is no real difference.

This is team sports, not politics. Just like a team can trade all the players and you will still cheer for it. They can comprimise all the principals and you will still vote for your team....the fact that issues are really not a part of this is exemplified by asking LJ if she ever had sex with a man, whoever said that must really have no points. Usually this means that the person asking the q has some latent sexuality issues, or they might have chosen a different petty attack or some real issues to use their words on. When you sling crap, expect it to land in your face.

And Romney is railing against Obamacare, but brought it to the American table.

I think it is best to focus on what they do, vs what they say. Romney and Obama are very similar. I bet if Romney was in office the last 3 years, that things would have been very similar, he might not have gone natl on Romneycare in the first term and would have passed SOPA, but I bet all the same spending would have occured. We will see when he is president (though Obama will likely win) if he really changes things or it is just marketed as change, but looks the same, which is likely. Obama and Bush now look just about the same, but could not have looked more different during the election, boy were we dupped. Are we going to do it again?
