George Washington statue is hidden at the MLK rally in Columbia, SC

The annual MLK observance at the state house in Columbia, SC had an interesting twist this year. The event is held on the north side steps of the statehouse. Prominent at that location is a large bronze statue of George Washington. This year, the NAACP constructed a "box" to conceal the father of our country from view so that participants would not be 'offended' by his presence.

I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw this picture of the MLK Day rally in Columbia, South Carolina. This rally was sponsored by the NAACP and they said that they covered the statue because they "didn't want to offend anyone". Really? George Washington is the father of this nation. How is he offensive to anyone?

Can you imagine what would happen if we covered the statue of Dr. Martin L. King on President's Day? or is only the statue of a 'white guy' offensive? Of course, this display of anti-Americanism wasn't covered at all by the national media (surprise, surprise!), and the local paper in Columbia only ran a short piece on it. It has been covered a little by the blog-world but I think the word needs to get out to the general public that this is what the NAACP is all about - militant and (most definitely) racist.

It couldn't have anything to do with...

George Washington was a slave owner for practically all of his professional life. His will ultimately emancipated his slaves upon the death of his widow Martha Washington. Although Washington personally opposed the institution of slavery after the American Revolutionary War while he was President, he gave emergency financial and military relief to French slave owners in Haiti to suppress a slave rebellion.[1] Washington also signed bills into law that allowed slave owners to recapture their slaves in any state and protected white U.S. citizenship. Washington signed the Northwest Territory Act that banned slavery in the Northwest Territory in 1789.

Er... probably not.

The other option was to throw a white sheet over the statue. Can you imagine the outrage over that?

A three-sided structure that covered the front and sides of the statue was intended to display a rally graphic and serve as a photo-and-television backdrop for the event’s speakers, said S.C. NAACP executive director Dwight James. However, the graphic was not finished before the rally and could not be put in place. The statue has been similarly covered at MLK Day events going back at least four years, though most groups holding rallies at the state house leave it unobstructed.

Would you prefer they tar & feather the statue?

And if you actually READ the article:

"The state chapter of the civil rights group claims it meant no disrespect and only covered up the statue to provide a more suitable backdrop for speakers at Monday's event."

"South Carolina NAACP director Dwight James told The State newspaper that his group was not trying to offend Washington's legacy."

Of course, when you cut and paste without reading the actual article, you run the risk of being made to look foolish by those whose words you took for the truth and posted without reading the article.

I don't know about that. This reminds me of when John Ashcroft wanted to cover the boobs of the Lady Justice statue. Was he marginalizing Justice?

Hmmm... then your hearing is suspect. What you did read is that President Obama is telling religious employees that their health plans MUST cover abortion and contraceptive services even though those services go against their long held religious beliefs. If you were being honest, you would have stated that. But your feigned "outrage" and outright lies is crude and sophomoric. Rather expected from you.

P.S. Your comment is an off-topic deflection. Rather expected from you.
