As far as I've heard... most of President Obama's money comes from 5-10 dollar donations from grass roots efforts.

But quite possibly the person who gets the most donations is the most popular candidate and does win. There have been exceptions at the state level. Meg Whitman spent much more than Gov. Moonbeam and still lost.
