I don't have a problem with state funded road construction and maintenance. Set the tax, budget and prioritize the projects. Get the Feds out of Transportation, its always been too political and full of pork projects. They were started originally to build the national interstate highway system and were supposed to end after that. LOL

The Fed regulation and financial support of highways, airports, and rivers is a good example of spending on a public good. Occasionally you get crap like the Robert Byrd Highway, but like VL says, it does help get goods to market.

One of the biggest issues Africa has economically is the lack of good roads between the nations. Very hard to get product to market or ports. Too many nations who can't agree on what needs to be done.

NO, you misunderstand. I am not talking about reducing transportation funding, just moving it to the states control. You would pay the same total gas tax, just to the state instead.

Of course a small amount to the Feds may still be needed for maintaining the Federal Interstate system that is already built, to account for less populated big states like Montana, WY etc.

The Feds have expanded the mission of DOT far beyond the original "building the Interstate highway system".

Why should the citizens of the other 49 states pay for widening I-70 from Denver to the ski areas? Why should Colorado pay for California's regional hi-speed rail to nowhere. And don't get me started on Federal funded bicycle paths. #%%^&*^$#@

Plus the Feds like to use highway funds as a stick/carrot to make the states follow laws they don't want to, like rasing the drinking age to 21 and lowering the speed limit to 55.

But Fred..I think the drinking age should be 21 and the speed limits go up to 75mph here in Colorado, so thats a non issue

Vice Lord makes up numbers like Obama runs up the national debt....

if there were any truth to VL's claims, there is a simple solution if they don't like flat tires - liberals give up gasoline cars and start walking.
