National Review Fires John Derbyshire, Writer Who Penned Racist Screed

The conservative magazine National Review has fired John Derbyshire, a prominent columnist who provoked outrage Friday with a column published in the webzine Taki's Magazine, which warned white people to avoid "large concentrations of blacks," among other nuggets of racially tinged advice.

Derbyshire has a history of controversy when it comes to race — he even proclaimed himself a racist, though a "tolerant" one, in a 2003 interview — but he had managed to avoid any real firestorms. His latest piece, though, proved to be a step too far. Written in response to articles about the "talk" black parents were having with their children about the dangers of racism in the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting, Derbyshire wrote about some of the offensive advice he had allegedly given his own children.

Swift fury followed, and on Saturday, National Review editor Rich Lowry bowed to the inevitable:

Anyone who has read Derb in our pages knows he’s a deeply literate, funny, and incisive writer. I direct anyone who doubts his talents to his delightful first novel, “Seeing Calvin Coolidge in a Dream,” or any one of his “Straggler” columns in the books section of NR. Derb is also maddening, outrageous, cranky, and provocative. His latest provocation, in a webzine, lurches from the politically incorrect to the nasty and indefensible. We never would have published it, but the main reason that people noticed it is that it is by a National Review writer. Derb is effectively using our name to get more oxygen for views with which we’d never associate ourselves otherwise. So there has to be a parting of the ways. Derb has long danced around the line on these issues, but this column is so outlandish it constitutes a kind of letter of resignation. It’s a free country, and Derb can write whatever he wants, wherever he wants. Just not in the pages of NR or NRO, or as someone associated with NR any longer.

Derbyshire once called himself a "homophobe."

Just can't help themselves. The ol' bigotry, racism, homophobia, hatred and sociopathic behavior just can't be controlled--apparently. Oh, well... Good riddance.

bomp...bomp...bomp... And another one bites the dust...

National Review Drops Contributor Robert Weissberg Over Racism

National Review announced that it cut ties with another contributor over racism on Tuesday.

The conservative journal let go of University of Illinois professor Robert Weissberg after discovering that he spoke at a conference for American Renaissance magazine in March. Weissberg had talked about ways of "maintaining whiteness" in "Whitopias."

National Review's announcement comes just days after John Derbyshire was fired for his virulently racist column that warned white people to avoid "large concentrations of blacks." Weissberg was a regular contributor for the journal's blog on education.

Editor Rich Lowry explained the decision in a post on Tuesday: "Unbeknowst to us, occasional Phi Beta Cons contributor Robert Weissberg (whose book was published a few years ago by Transaction) participated in an American Renaissance conference where he delivered a noxious talk about the future of white nationalism. He will no longer be posting here. Thanks to those who brought it to our attention."

There are racists on both sides. And National Review has the sense to get rid of them as opposed to the DNC which still provides a platform for Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

Sounds good to me and I haven't even started with the anti-Semitism of Obama's administration.

No, it's not a "they did it too".... the racist anti-Semite Sharpton is still gettting a paycheck from MSNBC while the National review took action and fired Weissberg. Maybe you could enlighten us as to why Sharpton should stay on the air given is history of racism and anti-Semitism.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.
