What's a little poaching as long as you were able to film it for a 3rd rate flick?
Ben Dickinson, the director, admitted, "We are idiots. We didn't know how to do this [hunting] stuff... There were so many deer weak from the winter and getting eaten by local dogs we didn't even think about it." Sure, they were just doing the deer a favor.
The movie industry is able to get away with breaking the rules every now and then. Like assault rifles in California? Only if you are the police or a movie studio.
But a really stupid thing to do, and then make it worse by putting it on film. Maybe their PETA friends will boycott this indie flick.

OMG they did not have a gubmnt permission to kill one of the countless deer in NY, are they insane?
We can fix this though after the fact.... with an extended investigation, fines, a few new laws and hopefully some jail time, you know....the new apple pie.
Had they not made a movie around it they could have quietly enjoyed a nice meal of venison (provided they had any clue about how to butcher and prepare the meat)... I guess that idea is too far away from reality to pass the Hipster test; I'm will to bet the accused will claim they didn't know there was a season for deer or that a license was required.
I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.
