GOP infighting gives Democrats hope of picking up Indiana Senate seat

In the 2010 midterm elections, the GOP was jarred by an array of suddenly-potent Tea Party-backed challengers taking on the party establishment. The movement achieved mixed results overall, but resulted in a Republican Party heavily influenced by it.

History is repeating itself in Indiana where one of the Senate’s two longest-serving Republicans, Richard Lugar, 80, who was first elected in 1976, is facing a challenge in the May 8 primary from state Treasurer Richard Mourdock, who became famous in 2009 for opposing the auto industry bailout and the forced write-downs for Chrysler bond holders.

Mourdock is backed by Tea Party activists, the Club for Growth, the National Rifle Association, and old-line social conservatives like Phyllis Schlafly.

As Lugar struggles to fend off Mourdock’s challenge, Democrats hope their candidate, Rep. Joe Donnelly, will profit from the GOP schism and pick up the incumbent’s seat in November.

Oh yeah - a State with a Republican governor, a Republican super-majority in the Senate and a 60/40 Republican advantage in the House is in danger of losing a seat in the national Senate to a Democrat. You betchum LJ - those Indiana folks have completely forgotten about the BOHICA the Democrats gave them over the Chrysler deal already. Their hoping for more of that kind of change . . . . .

Yeah, I'm sure the idea of one of the bat-sh*t-crazy teabaggers as a Senator is going to have them rushing to the polls... How's that worked out for you so far?

Got us control of the House in a 2010 shellacking and probably the Senate in 2012. We still have 2 elections to address the issue of Democrat Senators placing their political party ahead of the Constitution when they voted for the ACA which the Supreme Court will likely either strike in its entirety or effectively render unenforceable because of its unconstitutional mandates in June of this year. Indiana isn't about to put a Democrat in the Senate at this point in time after what the Democrats did to their State when it had the ability to ignore the will of the people and serve their political agenda instead.

You keep talking about 2010...But the American people have now had two years to see how bat-sh*t-crazy the teabaggers they elected have been. That's why so many of them are in trouble, and stand a good chance of being put out to pasture. That's why the Teabag Party's numbers are in the toilet.

That's why Walker is about to be recalled in Wisconsin; that's why more recalls of state legislators are about to occur. That's why two other recalls of governors are getting underway. That's why that lunatic in Arizona that wrote SB-1070 has ALREADY been recalled.... And Scott is in trouble in Florida, and Kasich is in trouble in Ohio... And Rick Snyder in Michigan may be facing a recall...

"What are the three demographic groups whose electoral impact is growing fastest? Hispanics, women, and young people. Who are Republicans pissing off the most? Latinos, women, and young people. It's almost as if the GOP can't help itself." -- Robert Reich
