 That's the "progressive" thing to do these days.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

EDRs have been voluntarily installed in commercial automobiles for several years. A 2006 report from The National Institute of Highway Safety showed that at least 64 percent of cars surveyed in 2005 had an EDR installed. One hundred percent of cars made by General Motors, Ford, Isuzu, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Suzuki came equipped with EDRs.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/90210985/Fina ... ation-2006

The final rule requires voluntarily installed EDRs in vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 3,855 kilograms (8,500 pounds) or less to:a.

Record 15 essential data elements,b.

Record up to 30 additional data elements if the vehicle is equipped to record these elements,c.

Record these data elements in a standardized format, with specifications for range, accuracy, resolution, sampling rate, recording duration, and filter class,d.

Function after full-scale vehicle crash tests specified in FMVSS Nos. 208 and214, and e.

Have the capacity to record two events in a multi-event crash. In addition, the final rule requires vehicle manufacturers to make a retrieval tool for the EDR information commercially available. The rule also requires vehicle manufacturers to include a standardized statement in the owner’s manual indicating that the vehicle is equipped with an EDR and describing its purposes.

Unintended consequences? Won't help the auto industry because it will give one more reason to hold onto your old car.

Don't these politicians and government employees realize that they are "Big Brother"? Have they not read "1984"? How do they rationalize their evil desires for bigger government?

How is it that progressives do not realize that having the government take care of you means that the government will control you? Are progressives that stupid?

The bill was co-sponsored by 2 (R)s and had 22 "Yea" (R) votes. So your "progressive" label is a little stupid.

In an ironic kind of way this bill may actually increase privacy compared to the status quo. The sensor data is already stored (by most car mfrs.) and use of it now varies by states in the courts. The use of the word "inspection" is interesting though. The new law clarifies that you own the data. Sort of :)

Although the text of legislation states that such data would remain the property of the owner of the vehicle, the government would have the power to access it in a number of circumstances, including by court order, if the owner consents to make it available, and pursuant to an investigation or inspection conducted by the Secretary of Transportation.

I think at this point life controlling progressives have either an R or D after their name. You seem to have forgotten that both of these parties represent big govt and more control, decisions made far from individual rights with all the economic and social consequences you have always had when people get their way with a stick vs. convincing people or trading. Neither group is looking out for you, they get in on your vote and that is your last point of contact.

Stupid is voting for people that are willing to hurt and physically force you to change your life if you don't stay in line in every way. Stupid is not seeing that there is very little difference between R's and D's, the only major difference is in the leftover marketing that is still floating around.

The 1/10,000 that don't upgrade cars cause of this will not hurt the car industry, plus it does not matter, if they don't spend money on cars, they will spend it on something else or even better, save it for a rainy, old timer day. Plus we have learned, we can be forced to update our cars, even buy them if we don't need them, to save us all. Just like with health care, we will fine you, hurt you or put you in jail for not complying, pretty cool progressive world that both major parties love and constantly support via their obsession with controlling other and getting their resources without trading for them, just taking.
