Billboard compares belief in climate change to mass Murder

A Chicago-based climate denial group has posted the first of several billboards to come that depict famous mass murderers who allegedly endorse climate change, asking passers-by if they do as well.

The first billboard, visible on Interstate 290 in Illinois, features “Unibomber” Ted Kaczynski. It reads: “I still believe in Global Warming. Do you?” A web address for The Heartland Institute is also visible.

Isn't this the kind of crap PETA pulls? Shock advertising is so stupid.

Big waste of money there for sure.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

Thankfully most eco-warriors unlike Ted are more into property crimes than killing their opponents. ELF etc.

Something tells me you guys have never bought a billboard....THAT is a GREAT BILLBOARD....I don't agree with the premise, but many do and it will be very effective at reaching the groups goals vs. other billboards they could have put up. Look how goofballs all over the country are posting it on their forums and message boards, spreading the message - I would even bet that it is those that believe in global warming (as I assume CG does) that will spread their message the furthest....That is a GREAT BILLBOARD - will be effective most of all because of folks like CG.

Wait, wait, then other believers, like LJ.....will keep posting on the topic, keeping this billboard pic near the top of the forums for a week or so.

Billboards typically cost $1,500-$10,000 for a 30 poster board (say 10x20) per month plus a couple hundred to print the sheet (unless it will be up for a while, then they use better print). That is very affordable, esp for a medium to larger firm or group.

Good point PE, if it is a reasonable message, only the people driving that way will see it, instead of forwarding it. But it also follows along with the bomb throwing style of politics these days, Republicans will take away Social Security, or Dems are destroying the American family.

Not that I agree with the message either, but they could of also included Osama bin Laden...

Bin Laden added that the organisation should approach a British journalist, Robert Fisk of the Independent, and other reporters to press home the message that the major powers would be better concentrating on climate change than pursuing al-Qaida. He wrote:

"This is a chance to explain our motives for continuing the war. The wise people would tell you to give people their rights in order to be able to focus on other vital issues such as global warming. They have the option to stop the war, but we do not have any option, except to defend our nation. This is a conflict between the biggest cultures in the world at a time when the climate is changing rapidly."

Climate skeptics retract billboard comparing scientists to 'madmen'

A group skeptical of mainstream climate science on Friday pulled down its billboard campaign comparing climate experts to "madmen" after complaints not only by scientists but the group's own supporters.

"We know that our billboard angered and disappointed many of Heartland’s friends and supporters, but we hope they understand what we were trying to do with this experiment," Heartland Institute Joseph Bast said in a statement. "We do not apologize for running the ad, and we will continue to experiment with ways to communicate the 'realist' message on the climate."

Dang... Even their own supporters were outraged... I guess the Koch Brothers overstepped the bounds--again. :bash

This has nothing to do with whether I believe in global warming. I am not into global warming. I am looking at this billboard as a stupid shock message. Who cares if serial killers believe in global warming? That has nothing to do with this, it actually hurts your cause to use things that are dumb and have nothing to do with the subject to get your message across no matter what that message is just like Pita, or sorry, I meant PETA. I am not looking at this debate as having anything to do with the subject.

I missed the PITA thing, but perhaps you were trying to imitate me...let me revise with respect to your criticism. My points are still on topic.

popcorn eater wrote: Guys, that is what a billboard is all about - shock value, grab attention, get the message to them quick, make them think and act....THAT is a GREAT BILLBOARD....I don't agree with the premise, but many do and it will be very effective at reaching the groups goals vs. other billboards they could have put up. Look how goofballs all over the country are posting it on their forums and message boards, spreading the message....That is a GREAT BILLBOARD - I bet those that spread it the furthest are those that don't just nod their heads and say yeah.

Wait, wait, then others, like LJ and me.....that will keep posting on the topic, keeping this billboard pic near the top of the forums for a week or so. Brilliant, shock value will get instant exponential return on your investment. The shock value of the courthouse gets more return for 285bound.

That is very affordable, esp for a medium to larger firm or group. If you want to get a message across, this is known to be the current value in media. I say this because people often think billboards are expensive.

Of course, people don't want to be associated with serial killers, even to share a perspective on a debatable issue. When one steps back of course we all know that we will hold views in common with such people, but our gut reaction is to not want to align in any way with such people. It helps us to feel normal, to be unlike in every way, people that we feel are not normal. This billboard, if I were to guess, is not about people on either extreme or people that don't care much, it was about people in the middle, who don't know what to think about the subject, but do care enough to want to decide. People that may be influenced by a quick pic of a killer, bad, bad, dude associated with a current hot topic debate side.

:Smileflower:

Sorry if I got all 285bound personal on ya on the first round. In regards to the thing getting pulled down. It is too late because of modern media (where it was viewed most, most likely) is still here, it is like a seed that was planted, it will still grow.

Oh yeah, and my personal opinion, that is a stupid billboard full of shock value, off the topic of effectiveness...glad we don't have many billboards around here. Wish I could get those huge cross lights spread out over the front range turned off for the same reason. Using symbols like the cross which represent when one particular individual was tortured to death and then pushing them blatantly in the faces of billions of people, over thousands of years, kinda makes me think this is not a new idea, shock value. I am I really off topic?
