Chinese officials are understood to have been aware of the trade and have tried to stop the capsules being exported but thousands of packets of them have been smuggled through to South Korea.

This is basically cannibalism - dangerous and taboo in almost every culture, including the Chinese. And no, I don't consider consuming placentas as cannibalism, as it is temporary tissue that the body ejects after it serves its function. It's still gross, and not safe, as HIV and other infectious diseases can be transmitted that way, education is sorely lacking - the reason it's safe and culturally acceptable to eat other animal meat is because the diseases that affect them generally do not infect us; eating another human...not so safe, as the New Guineans found out. But those who would knowingly consume and aborted fetus deserve what they get, IMHO.
