Obama's spiritual adviser disappointed in stance on gay marriage

LONGWOOD, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - The evangelical pastor who President Barack Obama calls his spiritual adviser says he’s disappointed in the president’s decision to endorse same-sex marriage.

The Rev. Joel Hunter, pastor of the 15,000 member Northland church in Longwood, said Obama called him before ABC News broadcast the announcement Wednesday.

Hunter says he told the president he disagreed with his interpretation of what the Bible says about marriage. Hunter says the president reassured him he would protect the religious freedom of churches who oppose gay marriage.

How will black churches and black Christians view President Obama's gay marriage decision?

“Black churches overwhelmingly oppose gay marriage… No one should be under any illusions that supporting gay marriage could cost Obama the black vote. It won’t. November will be about the economy, full stop. But it could cost him enough of the black vote to hurt him in November,” predicted conservative blogger Bryan Preston at PJTatler.

Will Obama's coming out on gay marriage be his "Mormon Moment?" There has been concern that Romney could loose some votes because some of the religious right does not consider Mormonism as a orthodox Christian faith. A majority of blacks voted for the anti-gay Proposition 8 in California. Will Obama loose votes in the religious black community because of his "evolving" stance on gay marriage and if he does will it make a difference in the November election? I have no problem with legalizing gay marriage. And I have no problem with Romney's Mormon faith. But are there enough voters who will stand by their religious convictions and effect the outcome of the November elections?

This election will still be more about the economy than who gets to be married. Minimal movement of voters.

From North Calrolina

African-Americans voted 2-1 in favor of the North Carolina amendment banning gay marriage Tuesday, but the White House is betting that black voters there and beyond will stick with the president, despite broad resistance to legalization.

While there’s faith that African-Americans will turn out strong at the polls to protect Obama’s legacy, pollsters point out that while opposition to same-sex marriages has fallen in the black community, it’s still just a point shy of 50 percent — enough to affect black turnout, at least theoretically, in an election where every vote will matter.

Obama’s statement rocked the political world. But it also underscored a widely held belief that African-American voters are closer to Republicans than Democrats when it comes to gay marriage.

“A lot of the people that I have spoken to that are self-identified Democrats are completely and totally against gay marriage — they believe it’s a sin,” said Michelle Bernard, president of the Bernard Center for Women, Politics and Public Policy.

In North Carolina in 2008, black turnout was the engine that propelled Obama to a key swing-state victory; the president captured over 95 percent of that vote, according to exit polls. On Tuesday, however, reports from North Carolina indicate a majority of black voters cast ballots for Amendment 1, defining marriage as solely between a man and a woman, and effectively nullifying the rights of same-sex partners.

I don't know how much religious beliefs will take precedence over political considerations in this case, but it's certainly something that could effect the votes in November. Religious sensibilities is usually not an issue in Democrat races but I think Obama may have crossed that rubicon... will there be a religious insurrection in the Democrat party?

If a Christian Democrat party ever came about, I wonder who would lose more voters, the Democrats or the Republicans.

And, of course, you understand that if California's Prop-8 goes all the way to the SCOTUS, and gets declared unconstitutional, it won't matter that 30+ states have enshrined discrimination in their state constitutions...It will nullify all of it--the same way that Loving vs. Virginia nullified all anti-marriage laws that applied to bi-racial couples.

It ain't over 'til it's over...

Let's examine the issue and your comment. In North Carolina... blacks voted for the state constitutional ban on same sex marriages 2 to 1...

So... are you stating that the blacks who voted for this ban are discriminating bigots?

 Now Barack is getting it from both sides with his weak sauce about letting states decide where homosexuals can marry. Gary Johnson, Libertarian nominee, says that just doesn't make sense. Let them get married anywhere in the US, half free/half slave house just can't stand.
