"Can California Be Fixed?

It's all Prop 13's fault. rofllol

"Recently, I was driving down pot-holed, two-lane, non-freeway 101 near Monterey (unchanged since the 1960s) when the radio blared that on a recent science test administered to public schools, California scored 47th in the nation. As I looked at the congested traffic on the decrepit highway and digested the idea that our public schools are competitive only with Mississippi and Alabama, I wondered — is that what we get for a more than 10 percent income tax, 10 percent state and local sales taxes, and the highest gas taxes in the nation?

To sum up why California has yet another deficit — this time a $16 billion whopper — is pretty easy: The number of demonized one-percenters who pay over 10 percent in their salary to the state has been shrinking, as thousands flee with their ideas, energy, business, and capital to nearby no-tax states, and others make less money due to more and more costs and regulations — while the number of those receiving all sorts of state housing, food, medical, education, and legal support is soaring. (In crude parlance, California increasingly is seen by some as a very bad deal, in terms of the sort of schools, safety, transportation, and housing per taxes paid in comparison to Reno, Tahoe, or Austin, but by far more people as a very good deal in comparison to the costs versus benefits in, for example, Oaxaca or El Salvador.)"..............

California just being too compassionate? It is like Detroit on a state wide level, run by Democrats with only a token opposistion from fiscal conservatives, they promise what they are unable to deliver.

Don't pay attention to Greece, don't pay attention to CA, just keep on spending and hoping tax hikes will be the answer...they won't and still the mathmatically impared will continue with the same.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

It wasn't just Prop-13, although that is certainly one of them...

CA Constitutional initiative (enacted 1979)
Article 13 Section 3 of the California State Constitution requires a two-thirds majority vote by the legislature in order to pass any tax increases.

Prop-13 (1978) Passage of the initiative presaged a "taxpayer revolt". However, of 30 anti-tax ballot measures that year, only 13 passed.

They've painted themselves into a corner, and now they are finally doing what needs to be done...taxing the 1%-ers a little more because, like the rest of America, the wealth has continued to flow upwards at a overwhelming rate, while leaving the folks at the bottom worse and worse off.

P*ss on John Galt.

Actually California was on its way out of their crisis when a few right wing legislators decided to impose "austerity" measures which wrecked their recovery.

You mean like this?

California governor begins term proposing massive austerity budget

On Monday, newly installed California governor Jerry Brown released his proposal to resolve the state's $24.5 billion budget deficit. The Democratic governor's budget is far more draconian than those of his predecessor, Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The proposed measures include nearly $12 billion in spending cuts, including in welfare, child health care, and higher education. The remaining portion would largely be made up through the extension of regressive tax increases, which would have to be approved by voters in the special election later this year in June.
The governor was completely unapologetic in recommending massive austerity measures, avoiding even the usual rhetorical hedges that accompany such public pronouncements. “It's better to take our medicine now,” Brown declared in unveiling the budget on Monday.

On one hand that is hilarious, on the other it's mind blowing that you believe it.

California is tha land of $100k+ lifeguards, ridiculous environmental regulations, perpetual government waste, and the "trains to nowhere". California faces some massive financial problems and tough decisions, and perhaps Brown realizes that California is looking too much like Greece.

In addition to the cuts, Brown hopes to close the deficit with $5.9 billion in new revenue from the tax initiative he proposed earlier this year that would temporarily add a quarter cent in the state sales tax and collect higher income taxes on those who make $250,000 a year or more.

I wonder if the 1% Hollywood liberals who just rallied around Obama will do the same for Brown and his tax proposals?
