CNN) -- The University of Notre Dame and "a diverse group of plaintiffs" filed lawsuits Monday challenging the federal mandate that religious employers offer health insurance that includes coverage of contraceptives and birth control services, Notre Dame spokeswoman Shannon Chapla said.
The Notre Dame suit, filed in the U.S. District Court in Northern Indiana, is one of a dozen filed Monday by 43 separate Catholic institutions in different federal courts around the United States, Chapla said.
The lawsuits are efforts to "vindicate the country's constitutional and traditional commitments to religious freedom and pluralism," Notre Dame law professor Richard W. Garnett said in a university statement.
Not much. Studies show that 98% of catholic women at risk of unintended pregancy have used contraception at some point and 87% currently use contraception.

This is not a "usage" issue.
I don't think it has anything to do with how many Catholic women use contraception. The Catholic Church perceives that this mandatory contraception health coverage is an affront to free practice of religion. It's a freedom of religion issues, not a freedom to get/use contraception. I think Obama will certainly loose votes over this. I think Obama will loose votes from other segments of the population that cherish their religious freedom and realize that this is a direct challenge by the Obama administration against the 1st amendment.
For some people this may be the last straw when it comes to this administration fiddling with constitutional rights.
I don't think it is that big of an issue, the election will be decided on issues that affect the day to day lives of the voters, meaning the economy. FYI, it is "lose" not "loose".

If the Catholic Church was as concerned and focused about the molestation of its children and members by its priests as it is about some b.s. rant over contraception, they might have a leg to stand on...

Well it's good that we don't have a Lady Jazzer Justice System, which would be akin to a communist regime. You're a piece of work. When you get together for large family gatherings, do you start in on the "Well... cousin "so-and-so" did it too?

Have to agree. 80% have already decided to vote for Obama or Romney, the 20% left are not going to worry about a a fake war on women or if Obama misrepresented his birthplace. But what will make those 20% choose? Thinking that Obama doesn't have a clue on how to fix things? Or believing that the economy will continue to fail, so they will vote for the guy that promises longer unemployment benefits and more food stamps?
In 1980, they decided to choose a guy who looked like he was capable and gave America optomism. (Romney dream scenario)
