Bitter primaries undercut GOP hopes in 3 states

Top Republicans in the states bemoan their choices and the GOP candidates' anemic fundraising.

It wasn't supposed to be like this in Florida or Pennsylvania or Michigan, three presidential battleground states. Republicans romped in all three in 2010, grabbing governorships, seizing majority control of state legislatures, and winning House and Senate seats. The three Democratic senators facing re-election in 2012 — Nelson, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan — were certain to face top GOP recruits and strong political headwinds.

Now, roughly five months to Election Day, the three states look like missed opportunities for the GOP.

In Pennsylvania, Republican Gov. Tom Corbett's choice to challenge Casey finished an embarrassing third in the April primary. The GOP nominee is Tom Smith, who made a fortune in the coal mining business but lacks the name recognition of Casey, the son of a popular former governor.

In Michigan, former Rep. Pete Hoekstra, who finished second in the 2010 GOP primary for governor, stumbled in January with a controversial ad in which a young Asian woman spoke in broken English about China taking U.S. jobs. He faces a challenge from Clark Durant, who has the support of top Republicans Spencer Abraham and Saul Anuzis in a likely five-man primary on Aug. 7. Abraham represented Michigan in the U.S. Senate until he was ousted by Stabenow in the 2000 election, while Anuzis is running for Republican National Committee chairman.

The GOP envisions a road to a Senate majority — it needs a net gain of four seats to win control — but at this stage, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Florida aren't prime real estate.

Oopsie... Looks like the public is starting to figure out their teabagger choices in 2010 have born bitter fruit, and that primarying the sane ones on their side, (the RINO's? rofllol ) is going to cost them in the long run... (Can you say Sharron "Second Amendment Remedies" Angle? or Christine "I'm not a witch" O'Donnell", or Sarah "Our friends, the North Korean Allies"/"Africa is a country" Palin?)

Ask Dick Lugar if he feels the TEA Party is fielding candidates that can't compete.

The alternative is to keep the same people in office who have been "doin' us" for a long time (democrats AND reps). At least many of us conservatives are trying to change the status quo, which you may be comfortable with, but when this crew is driving us over a cliff at full speed, I am not. I want change....regardless how that happens, and I'm willing to lose a few to make a point to those who are way too comfortable in their positions.

Too bad future generations aren't here to see all the great things we are spending their $$ on!!

LJ,
You may not actually mean that. What would you prefer, the GOP only picking up a couple of Senate seats with hardliner TEA Party types that will hold the pass against Dem budget increases, or elect four old guard GOP types who will compromise and actually work with Barack and Reid.

I will. Since unlike you (since you appear happy with our current course...or at least unwilling to do anything about it other than rant here), I actually want something left of this country for the next generation.

If you want to be, press one. If you want not to be, press 2

Republicans are red, democrats are blue, neither of them, gives a flip about you.

I'm unwilling to let the same folks back into the White House (and the House and the Senate) to destroy the country with the same (but "updated") policies that put us into the ditch in the first place. I actually want to keep the plutocrats and knuckle-draggers out of office before they do any more harm.

Oh.... and the obligatory:

And what would you do if the GOP did get back in the office? And the obligatory... socialist.
