Democracy For Sale - who's buying?

Who Funds the Democrats?

A decade ago, corporate PACs favored Republicans over Democrats by about a two-to-one ratio.

By the 2008 election cycle, however, when Democrats were poised to control both chambers of Congress and the White House, contributions from business PACs were split about evenly between Republican and Democratic candidates and groups. During the 2010 election cycle, that parity continued—almost down to the last dollar....

...All the while, labor union PAC contributions hovered between $59 million and $73 million, typically with 90 percent or more of those dollars supporting Democrats each election cycle, according to the Center's research.

While corporate PACs doled out 73 percent more money during the 2010 election cycle than they did during the 2000 election cycle, union PACs donated just 17 percent more.

I love this paragraph

Mike has charts, too. It's pretty clear, as Yglesias theorized, that as union donations fail to keep up with ever-increasing amounts of money from corporations and rich businessmen, the Democrats are forced to replace the union money with corporate dollars. And you can bet that money comes with strings attached.

As if the union money doesn't come with "strings attached."

2010 PAC contribution percentages.

House Democrats 38%
House Republicans 24%
Senate Democrats 15%
Senate Republicans 12%

And how is Obama and Romney doing in the campaign contribution department?

Earlier today, Team O and the DNC announced that they had jointly raised $60 million in May, up from the previous month’s $43.6 million:

President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party have raised a combined $60 million in May for his re-election effort.

The totals helped the president exceed his fundraising haul in April, when his campaign and his party raised $43.6 million. That was slightly more than his presumed challenger in the November election, Mitt Romney, and the Republican Party, which raised about $40 million during the month.

Through May, Obama and Democratic groups backing his campaign have raised about $510 million. Romney and Republicans supporting him have brought in more than $400 million through April. Republican super PACs have raised more than their Democratic counterparts, helping Romney keep pace with Obama.

I love this article about campaign funding...

If Obama Takes Super PAC Money, He Must Fight Like Hell to Make it Illegal and Unconstitutional in the Future

Monday evening I received a blast email to past Obama supporters from President Obama's campaign manager Jim Messina, that henceforth the Obama reelection campaign would work closely with pro-Democratic Super PACs to raise unlimited campaign contributions from large corporations, unions, and individual millionaires and billionaires.

While from an extremely cynical, short-term "pragmatic" view of the corrupt world of bought and paid for elections we live in I could understand the decision, I found it extremely depressing and disheartening.

If Obama is going to acquiesce in bringing Super PAC guns to his 2012 presidential fight in order to battle the Republicans' Super PAC guns, he must make it a centerpiece of his election campaign that this will be the last American election in which such weapons will be legal.

Yep... that's the ticket. Work with the PAC's just for 2012, then outlaw PAC's. "Billy Joe shot a man while robbing his castle... Bobbie Sue took the money and run....Go on take the money and run. (I almost can't believe an adult wrote the Huffington Post article).

Romney has picked up some good deals at the Democracy Sale.

It looks to me that the GOP and the Democrats are picking up great bargains at the Democracy For Sale event. The liberals like to forget (or purposely lie about) that their sources of money are as entrenched in ideological motivation as the conservatives contributors are. I say this sale is going well and I'm looking forward to seeing the results. I hope they spend their money wisely.
