Abound & Schott Solar Panel Companies To Shut Down

Per the Denver Post, despite hundreds of millions in federal loan guarantees, the Colorado solar panel company Abound will be shutting down after earlier layoffs. Looks like federal taxpayers will be on the hook for 40-60 million more dollars due to those loan guarantees. Seems due to regulations, green energy companies can't compete with regulation free Chinese firms.

And Schott Solar in New Mexico is also going to have to shut down.

I'm not surprised. When I looked into getting solar panels 2 years ago, the company I talked to said that way too many were jumping into the field with the promise of huge growth, and they didn't really know what they were doing or how to sustain their businesses long-term. The type of panels that Abound was manufacturing were less efficient than silicon panels, and would only be marketable if the cost of silicon went up (which it didn't). I myself would never go for a less efficient panel, unless they were semi-transparent window glazes and supplemented what I put on the roof, so making these seems dubious at best.

Abound Investors Have Links to Republicans, Democrats

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

I know someone who worked there who was laid off. Seems like the same story. I've seen a lot of this grab for government grants and flashy proposals that promise the world. Its always been this way, only its the DOE doing it now instead of the DOD.
