James Holmes Received $26K Grant From Bethesda-Based National Institutes of Health

WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) - James Holmes, the alleged gunman in the recent theater shooting that left 12 dead in Aurora, Colo., was previously awarded a $26,000 federal grant.

WNEW News reports that Holmes was awarded a prestigious grant from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

It gave the graduate student a $26,000 stipend and paid his tuition for the highly competitive neuroscience program at the University of Colorado in Denver. Holmes was one of six neuroscience students at the school to get the grant money.

This is the last straw. We need grant control laws unless we want to see more and more of these kinds of mass murders.

People on my Facebook were wondering where the shooter, a poor college student, got the money for guns, ammo, and bombs. He earned it the Obama way, by goverment grant.

Looks like the NIH should have spent that money on treating that poor boy instead.

If this was a "rant" on the Onion or by Stewart, you'd be laughing your ass off. Put your phony "outrage" at my "rant" back in your pocket. You look stupid.

Ok... is there a trend going on here? Remember this incident, just a couple of years old...

Not long after Amy Bishop was identified as the professor who had been arrested in the shooting of six faculty members at the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Feb. 12, the campus police received a series of reports even stranger than the shooting itself.

Several people with connections to the university’s biology department warned that Dr. Bishop, a neuroscientist with a Harvard Ph.D., might have booby-trapped the science building with some sort of “herpes bomb,” police officials said, designed to spread the dangerous virus.

Her academic career slammed to a halt with the shooting rampage nine days ago against her colleagues. Dr. Bishop, 45, is accused of killing three fellow biology professors, including the department’s chairman, at a faculty meeting. Three others were wounded.

Another neuroscientist goes on a rampage? We need controls on neuroscientist... hell... lets not take any chances... I think we should outlaw ALL scientists.

Sheesh, it's not "the Obama way", this is how it has been for decades. All PhD students get their tuition paid for, and stipends as part of their acceptance. Some programs require that after the students formally join a laboratory (by the end of their 1st year) in which to conduct their thesis research that the tuition cost for the student be transferred from the school/department to the PI (Principal Investigator). Some PIs then expect the students to apply for grants themselves, but most support the students with their own research grants, often R01's from the NIH but also grants from the NSF and to a lesser extent biotechs/industry. A Principal Investigator "employs" post-docs (those who have gotten their PhD's and are getting more training before taking a tenure-track permanent university position or moving on to industry or education), graduate students (aka cheap slave labor) , and technicians. The American public in return for this investment, gets research that translates into new technology and disease treatments that increase our country's GDP and a continued supply of educated scientists.

Stop funding them...see how fast our country goes down the toilet. The powerhouses in this world are the ones who have the highest scientific investment and output.

When I was in graduate school the going rate was $15K (after withholdings, that was $1,000/month to live on); $26K still isn't a whole lot but he obviously had an agenda and prioritized his spending in a most unfortunate manner.

TLGT, you're hilarious! lol

SC gets it, why don't you? I thought it was funny in a twisted sort of way, but then again, I understand sarcasm.

Unless you've hung out here on a regular basis and/or been posting regularly (cuz you're crazy??!!), it's easy to mistake TLGT's harmless sarcasm with his genuine attempts at trolling. Let's give hillfarmer a break! hillfarmer, thank you for smacking TLGT down, he deserves it every time! tongue:

Frankly, I'm highly disappointed that it took TLGT this long to start bashing on us neuroscientists.
