Some maybe overly sensitive about posts concerning firearms because of the recent events in Aurora; if my post offended anyone for that reason I apologize. I'm not insensitive to those who were injured or killed and their families, they have my greatest respect and condolences. I know many families are grieving and having to confront the reality of the injury or loss of their loved ones.
As for jmc's posts, I'm not convinced it was the real jmc. If it was then so be it, jmc is entitled to have an opinion and post here just as much as you and I.
I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

If you can hit 7 out of 8 times you have time to reload a 1911 and the stopping power of a .45 round will halt most things you hit with one round, assuming you hit center mass or the head. Being able to achieve a 90% success rate means you have to train on a regular basis and know your handgun very well.
I inherited a match pair of 1911 Colt .45's from my Great Grandfather who was a Marine in WW I and I have a 9mm M9 Beretta that I bought after leaving the Navy. In the DoD's eyes handguns have always been regarded as side arms and a secondary backup to the primary long gun, if I have to count on a handgun in an active theater of war many other things have gone wrong.
Domestically I'll shoot the Beretta all day long at a range because the ammo is cheap, but when the caca hits the fan there are many other weapons I'll go to before taking up a handgun. If it comes down to handguns then I'm not reaching for the Beretta until I run out of loaded .45 magazines.

I have 1918 Colt single stack pistols that were handed down to me, they stay in the box I got them in, and a couple of 1980 Colt .45's that I actually take to the range. If you want to take the risk you could walk around with one round in the chamber and make it a nine round pistol but I don't feel that is a safe configuration. Call me old fashioned but if I need more than eight rounds at a time I'm living in a war zone or the Zombie invasion is underway; I'm open to the idea but I'd go with my long guns first, fall back on shotguns and then handguns as a last resort.
I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.
