A new poll from the nonprofit Kaiser Family Foundation shows that the selection of Paul Ryan for the Republican ticket has had an unexpected side effect: people now see Medicare as a higher-priority issue than Obamacare. A Kaiser poll a week earlier showed that 58% of adults want to keep Medicare as it is and only 36% want the Republican plan. Clearly, with numbers like these, the Democrats are going to keep Medicare in the spotlight until the election.
For the Republicans, the reason for wanting to have vouchers replace the current Medicare system goes something like this (in the long term). First, the size of the voucher could easily be reduced over time, making it less and less valuable which would de facto phase out the program. Also, a future Congress could means test the vouchers to save money. But if at some point everyone had to pay taxes to support Medicare but only the poor got vouchers, the Republicans would be able to attack the program as a welfare scheme and argue it should be abolished.
Medicare and Social Security will both wind up being means tested. You have too many people taking out as opposed to paying into the programs, especially during the current Obamarecession.

Clearly 58% of adults who responded to the poll are unfamiliar with the Republican plan because it preserves MediCare exactly as it is for any who wish to choose that option for themselves.
The left has returned to MediSCARE once again - and it is truly a shame that they feel their only hope of winning lies in perpetuating belief in a myth.
You said earlier that the debates would decide the election Raees, and I hope that you are right. During the debates Romney is sure to point out that the Republican plan preserves MediCare exactly as it is for those who wish to choose that option for themselves when they reach retirement age. What the Democrats are really afraid of, of course, is that by allowing more options it will be shown that the better option is the one proposed by Republicans and the results will speak louder than the Democrat's MediSCARE tactics ever did.
Interesting to see that the American voters are so concerned about their future benefits when so many do little privately to prepare themselves for retirement. So many people retire with less than $50,000 in savings.

Yeah, it's ignorant of them when they're unemployed, or underemployed, or having to care for elderly parents to have to choose between a mortgage payment, food on the table, sending the kids to school, and having any left to sock away for retirement.
Oh, I forgot... I'm dealing with a Randroid... My bad...
Why couldn't they have been as smart, educated and resourceful as you. It's still all about you, isn't it...
"Mom, I have some news for you. We want to move you to vouchers, so we can control how much you spend on Medicare. It will decline over time and your health care costs are going up."
