CHICAGO (AP) -- The Chicago Teachers Union has given a 10-day strike notice, saying members are willing to walk off the job for the first time in 25 years.
Union President Karen Lewis said Wednesday that contract talks are faltering, with unresolved issues that include pay increases and job security.
Replace them if they strike. I'm sure there are a lot of teachers in the lower 48 out of work at the moment who would love to get back in the classroom. Every public sector union contract should include a no-strike clause. That the members of the government responsible for negotiating the contract with the teacher's union last time around didn't include such a clause tells you all you need to know about how beholden school boards have become to the teacher's union to keep their chair at the table. It is a prime example of the inherent conflict of interest that is present when public sector union members are allowed to collectively bargain for wages and benefits.
