This is why I won't own a gun. I would rather die than have this happen to me.

You shouldn't own a car either because people have been known to back over their kids in the driveway.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

I am not against owning a gun I am saying I should now own one though. And the make my day law scares me for this story.

Sorry. The kid showed a mortal lack of common sense. Like dodging cars after dark wearing black.

Several things here. This was not in Colorado, so the so called "Make My Day" law isn't relivant. Second, the law applies to persons in your home without permission, not outdoors. Third, I imagine the father taught his boy that theft was not only wrong, but could get you killed.
People are free to make their mind up whether to be a potential victim or to have a fighting chance.

It's not about "make my day".

The subject line should be "Son... Gone bad." Isn't that what most people say about someone that turns to theft?

These are the Colorado Revised Statutes regarding use of force. The "Make My Day" law (704.5) is about absolute safety in one's residence.

For crying out loud guys, really? You can't even for one moment put yourself in another man's shoes a.d realize his world got turned upside down? The man went to the defense of his sister and to his horror and anguish discovered that his sister was imperiled by his own son who was now dead as a result of the shot he himself fired. Can a single one of you when you look inward not imagine that you might regret taking that shot?

It wouldn't be any more or less tragic if the father had been a LEO than it is with him being a schoolteacher. There is no less anguish because the son was adopted. Humanity must sometimes trump ideology and I get what you're saying CG.

I agree that the fault lies with the son and that it should be a potentially fatal decision for one to attempt to break into another's home to steal from them. That isn't the point here. The point is that a father now lives with the knowledge that his son lies dead because he came to the aid of his sister. Put aside everything else as you put yourself in that man's shoes and ponder what he faces when his eyes open today.

I am doing exactly that. A son should know his father well enough to know what would happen to a thief. The son dressed in black and brought it on himself. That father shouldn't feel any guilt at all, unless he somehow failed in his attempts to impress good morals on his son.
