BB,
Seem to you that secularism in Islamic countries continues to decline? So that gains in Pakistan for females and other countries are being lost? A few examples of countries that were more secular decades ago.
Afghanistan under the Soviets
Iraq under Saddam before the first Gulf War
Egypt under Mubarak
Libya under Qadaffi
Iran under the Shah
Turkey, a decade ago.

Any Arab countries that are becoming more secular?

fundamentalism does seem to be on the rise.
ergo - secular Islam seems to be on a decline.

The Turks still cringe at the sight of Ergodan's wife covering her head
(15 years ago, he was in prison for reciting what was perceived as an Islamic poem)

Re. my comments on the deep South -- no, I don't think it's status quo --- but it's hardly speculative to
say that it happens. It also happens in parts of Idaho - and I'd imagine in just about every corner of the USA.

I apologize if I've offended you.

Am I arrogant? Well - I try not to be. Am I fed up with trying to think positively about the Orient? Getting there.
