Most schools (with the concurrence of the Supreme Court) prohibit the wearing of clothing that might have a disruptive effect. Certainly political statements might be considered to have that effect. The kid of a friend of mine was sent home for wearing a Mary Jane ski resort T shirt, until the principal was informed of Mary Jane/Winter Park and it was not a reference to drugs (not directly at least) (obviously not from Colorado).

Yes they were. And the gang it was supposedly connected to is in California. Duh. Ridiculous to punish the kid who wanted to support his football team instead of going after the root of the problem - the kids who are actually in gangs, and the social and economical situation that pushes kids into gangs. <smacks head>
I find it sad that a shirt with a presidential candidate's name would be used as an excuse that it "causes a disruption" - aren't we supposed to celebrate political participation? Embrace our civic duty and encourage it in our children? While I was volunteering at my kids' school last week for their hearing and vision screening clinics, there was a girl wearing a Presidential debate @DU t-shirt - turns out her whole family had gone to the debate. When one of the other parent volunteers pointed this out to their teacher (it was a 4th grade class), the teacher said she hadn't even noticed, she rarely looked at what the kids were wearing. I actually thought that was sadly unobservant of her as she could've used it as a teaching moment (she seemed to not care about her students at all, which is very unusual for my kids school). Our society seems to be missing the big picture and it's not a good thing imo...
"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill
