Why are states so predictably red and blue?

LOL its because they are herders vs. farmers. Interesting analysis and article.

http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/20 ... -and-blue/

"The historian David Hackett Fischer traces the divide back to the British settlers of colonial America. The North was largely settled by English farmers, the inland South by Scots-Irish herders. And this...The North and coasts are extensions of Europe and continued the government-driven civilizing process that had been gathering momentum since the Middle Ages. The South and West preserved the culture of honor that emerged in the anarchic territories of the growing country, tempered by their own civilizing forces of churches, families and temperance. "

Red are mad, and blue is holding it's breath.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

I don't think they are. Texas, now a Republican bastion used to be Democrat. And now Dems are predicting that the Latino birth rate will return Texas back to the Dems in a decade or more.

Personally I think it is more an urban/rural thing. Blues are natually attracted to high population centers that need much more goverment control. Reds like open spaces and quiet, distant neighbors. VL says this is why the 285 corridor is the most racist, misogynist, uneducated place in the world.
