24 Years After, Remembering Pan Am Flight 103

On December 21, 1988—24 years ago today—the world experienced an act of terrorism that will never be forgotten when Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing everyone on board.

Today, at Arlington National Cemetery’s Lockerbie Cairn—a memorial built of 270 blocks of red Scottish sandstone, each representing a life that was was lost in the disaster—FBI Director Robert Mueller joined other officials and investigators in gathering with the families and friends of the victims to honor and remember those who died.

Do you remember where you were when you heard?

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

You won't believe it, but I had a seat on the flight and ended up taking another one. I was a soldier trying to get back home from Germany for the holidays. My wife had left with our young daughter days ahead of me. The travel agency kept trying to book me for the Pan Am flight but my wife insisted they place me on an earlier flight. They did and I dodged a bullet.

I was sitting in a car safely at home listening to the radio when I heard the terrible news. You have heard people say a chill went up and down their spine. Factor that times ten.

I am thankful she was insistent and count my blessings this time every year since. True story.

Spooky. Buy a lottery ticket after that? I honestly don't remember where I was but I can recall the video of all the debris.

Stationed onboard the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT CVN-71, ship was loading supplies, ammo, and lighting off equipment for our maiden deployment. We left port early because of it. We departed Norfolk 30 Dec 1988

It was around lunch time and I had just got done fueling a 747SP that was headed nonstop to Soeul South Korea from Chicago..I was eating my bologna sandwich when I saw the story on TV...I didn't think much of it. Later when I heard it was a possible terrorist attack I started wondering what my government did to make someone want to do this to us..

Ah...I'm really not buying that...Same year, same month maybe, but not the same flight...

I figured some wouldn't believe it but it's a true story. I have no reason to make up such a story and would never dishonor all those who died by doing so.
