Total Afghan Withdrawl?

Obama met with Karzai today.
Fox News radio feed was throwing out the idea that by 2014 there will be no troops left in Afghanistan. Original plans, supported by the Pentagon was to leave about 10,000 GI's to train Afghan forces and also have a ready reaction force to deal with any major Taliban operations.

Now it looks like the administration is willing to just pull everyone out.

It does sound tantalizing to finally be free of this massive operation, the longest war in US history, but I also worry Karzai and his ilk don't have the determination and talent to keep the Taliban from taking the country back over.
Will we be seeing another Saigon in five years? Blackhawks evacuating embassy personnel? Or another Iran/Argo with our embassy people being held hostage again.

What are you worried about Fred? Barry and Hamid say they have the whole situation under control. The Taliban and al-Qaeda have been eliminated and are no longer a threat in any nation around the world... Oh, wait.

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

Great point. I worry a continued reduced presence will just increase American casualties.

I think it's time to bring our troops home. I'm tired of being the world's policeman and throwing our young people at missiles and IEDs. If the military has to be in a war, let it be one in this country against leaky borders and drug/gun runners.

Some people were up in arms (no pun intended) over the UN wanting to monitor our elections. Yet the US has no qualms thinking it has the right to monitor other countries'.

No one appointed us as overseer of the world and I think it's time to stop.

We're never going to be able to go after all the cockroaches that want to kill US citizens so we may as well let them take over Afghanistan again and wait until they congregate. Our mission should be to establish better intel in the ME and zap the scumbags from the air without getting our hands dirty. Of course this would require help from the governments involved who don't want terrorists. We also have to remember how much more breathing room Iran will have once we leave the area... we're obviously not going to prevent them from getting nukes, so I hope we keep our defense state of the art as our military is gutted.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

I agree with most of what you say.

The problem I see is that we also have to be willing to live with terrorists moving into these areas who will unite and come back probably stronger.
