Pannetta Approves Women In Combat Roles

I think you will find the women today plenty tough. They start conditioning their bodies at a young age. Many weight lift, run and play hard, competitive sports. I have young nieces who regularly whip thieir brothers and male cousins butts in competition. Not all men can handle the training either, but those women who can will make excellent soldiers.

Correction: I think the women of today are more physically tough, but mentally tough, having gone through the Great Depression, really hardened them up.

And, of course, these are just generalizations. There are plenty of women I know today who I think would be both mentally and physically tough enough to serve in combat.

Everyone should have to pass the same tests and meet the same standards, no dumbing down. But if women can do the job, the should have the same opportunities as men. As them other of sons, I'm tired of the idea the females lives are somehow more valuable than males. Mysons are as precious to me as anyones daughters are to them. We are all equally responsible for protecting our freedoms.

Time for teen women to have to sign up for Selective Service too? Actually, do they still require young males to do this?

There will never be another draft in this country. Better to do away with the Selective Service. I think it hangs on due to bureaucratic inertia.

Yes they do. And your right, if the men have to do it so should the women.

Men are generally physically stronger than women are. The physiology of a male's body just makes them that way. That being said, not all men are cut out to handle the rigors of special ops. Men usually drop out of special ops training due not due to lack of physical strength, but to mental and emotional strain.

Women are generally mentally stronger than men are. I can see women dropping out due to lack of physical strength.

Part of the problem with not allowing women in combat is that it limits promotion for them...especially in the higher officer ranks.

This guy has it right. From the link above.

Especially in the Army where a point system is allotted to Special OPS or Ranger training.

My 2 cents on women in combat. I don’t have a problem with women in 99.9% of the roles in the military including ground troops. Right now they are already flying helicopters, airplanes, driving trucks and in the asymmetrical battle situations in which we are currently participating women are daily facing combat. I can easily see women as fighter pilots, bomber pilots, heli pilots, armor, snipers, and yes even grunt ground pounders. I don’t see many women in the elite of the elite fighting forces, The Seals or Marine’s Force Recon. I do think there would be a role for women in such forces as the Green Berets. I am not knocking the Army or the Green Berets, it’s just that their role is different, than say a Seal Team. On the news they were interviewing a soldier, and he was expressing a concern that having women in combat might be a cause for sexual tension. I call BS on that, your thoughts are: where is that MF that is shooting at me? How can I eliminate that threat? Does the person next to me have my back? Can the person next to me eliminate the threat? What can I do to make sure we all get out of this without harm, those and a thousand other thoughts. But I don’t think “she sure has a cute butt”, or “she has pretty eyes”, or “I wonder what she looks like naked” thoughts are going to be popping in to someone’s head.
Women are a lot tougher than we (males) often give them credit for, often because they are protecting our egos.
