Pannetta Approves Women In Combat Roles

Other nations have used them, like the Soviets, but will the American public go along with this, especially if we get involved in a major ground campaign?

Personally I think there are a lot of American women tough enough for combat, but I think it should remain volunteer only. Of course, in war, especially assymetrical, combat can happen anywhere.

But not today.

""We are moving in the direction of women as infantry soldiers," one senior defense official said. Panetta's decision mandates that the studies and reviews on women as infantry soldiers must be completed by October 2015 — women soldiers will not be assigned to infantry any sooner than that, the official explained."...............

A senior military official says the services will develop plans for allowing women to seek the combat positions. Some jobs may open as soon as this year. Assessments for others, such as special operations forces, including Navy SEALS and the Army's Delta Force, may take longer.....
The official said the military chiefs must report back to Panetta with their initial implementation plans by May 15. The announcement on Panetta's decision is not expected until Thursday, so the official spoke on condition of anonymity.

I'm glad to see this, I think they'll find that women do just fine like we have in many other roles that were once considered too strenuous or difficult for women to complete.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

SC, are we agreed that women should be capable of the same physical tasks that are required of male soldiers?

I tried googling requirements for combat arms and apparently it is a computer game. :(: Perhaps Grady or some other ground pounder could weigh in on that.

Not all men can do it either. I was stronger and more capable than many men my age (still am). You should be judged by your abilities, not your naughty bits. There are many combat roles that women can fill just as capably as men. Men's lives are not less valuable than those of women.

Quite correct but I do believe that all men assigned combat arms can do it. I hope the same standard is applied to women. Women are already filling many combat roles.

They run supplies , drive trucks and do many many important jobs in support of combat troops.
I agree with Bob, every man that is in combat earned that spot.

Irony? Women from the Greatest Generation were probably tougher than the women of today and they couldn't serve in combat.
