The thing is; the no new taxes pledge backfires badly when you don't reduce spending. If you want stuff, you have to pay for it. I think the "starve the beast" philosophy has blown up in our faces. We need to admit that and stop charging everything. If people aren't willing to give things up, we darn well need to pay for them. Maybe if people's taxes rise they will take a serious look at how many government services they really need.

Agree. We are spending $3 for every $2 that comes in. It is a lot easier to tell someone their budget request is approved than to cut someone's funding. No lobbyists for the taxpayers in DC.

Something the Dog Said wrote: "The Republicans try to run on fiscal responsibility" That is one of the most humorous statements yet by Fred. When was the last time that a Republican administration reduced the deficit? Or the last time that a Republican administration reduced the number of government employees?

I guess the operative words are "try to run" since obviously they can not factually run on that statement.

But you don't seem to like the Tea Party which has been pushing hard for fiscal responsibility. Maybe it's just the name, but they are mostly Republicans and they do want to make the tough choices, even if it goes against what past administrations have done. Destroy the Tea Party movement, and you destroy the only hope for getting our fiscal house in order. Unless you can show me the relevant group of democrats that want to stop the madness.

Just a subset. The entrenched r's hate them as much as the entrenched d's.

If the TEA Party Reps in Congress are "house" Republicans, why did Boehner take them off committee posts?

How can I fool myself when that is what I said?

I think that's true for both sides... I know I've been guilty of that in the past. I've said this in the past and I'll say it again... using broad brush stereotypes as a way to describe liberals or conservatives is the exact same thinking used by racists. Not saying ultra partisans are racist, just that they tend to see groups they disagree with as all having the same percieved flaws.... "conservatives are greedy, only care about themselves, racists...blah blah. And Liberals are socialists, communists, godless. blah blah."

And you don't have to go to a Tea Party meeting or be a republican to agree with the TP ideas of reducing the size of the government and empowering the individual through reducing taxes. My dad is a liberal and actually agrees with this concept but like so many on the left, he was led to believe it was a racist movement from the beginning. When I've challenged him to show me the evidence, he only can say there were some racist signs and not many black folks joining the rallies. He has since conceded that the TP is no different than OWS where there will always be a radical fringe that partisans use to paint the whole group... I WAS one of these partisans... guilty as charged.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

I was too Rick. Luckily I have a wonderful group of friends that showed me that, in the end, we are all in this together. Working together will always get us better outcomes than working against each other. Sadly, there have always been bigots and they cling stubbornly to their ways. They get so involved at pointing their fingers at others that they have no time for self reflection. We just have to find ways to work around them.
