Alabama hostage crisis over
Alabama hostage boy safe, kidnapper dead

Updated at 5:45 p.m. ET: A 5-year-old boy held captive for seven days in an underground bunker in southern Alabama is alive and his kidnapper is dead, Special Agent in Charge Stephen Richardson said at a press briefing on Monday afternoon.

“Within the past 24 hours negotiations deteriorated and Mr. Dykes was observed holding a gun," Richardson, of the Mobile, Ala. FBI office, said in a brief statement. "At this point, FBI agents, fearing the child was in imminent danger, entered the bunker and rescued the child.”

The child was recovered at 3:12 p.m. CT and appears physically unharmed, Richardson said. He is being treated at a local hospital.

The Dothan Eagle newspaper reported hearing two loud bangs from the scene shortly before 3:30 p.m. According to the report, an ambulance then drove up the private dirt road where Dykes’ homes is located and then left a short time later.

Dykes, described by his neighbors as a paranoid survivalist, grabbed the boy from a school bus in Midland City, Ala. just after 3:30 p.m. CT last Tuesday.

Well, good... A "paranoid survivalist with a gun" has been killed before he could kill a 5-yr-old...(After killing a bus-driver who told him, "No"...)

Poor child. Hopefully mentally he recovers quickly. Must have been a real horrorshow to experience.

Meanwhile in Chicago, another 40 people were not murdered by survivalist gun owners. But lets not let an anecdotal tragedy go to waste.

This was hardly an anecdotal tragedy....a real child was terrorized, a real bus driver was murdered, and a real sick dude did this. But, as seems so often the case with conservatives, if it isn't a tragedy that effects them personally, it isn't important.

Sounds this morning like the kid recovered quickly. Appears to be a special needs child. Good for him and his family.

Saw one report the mother had asked the police to not hurt the kidnapper, because he was mentally ill.

LJ was highlighting a "survivalist gun owner" as if that is a common characteristic of a murdering child abductor, which it's not. This was another mentally ill psycho.

Meanwhile, another 40 people will be murdered in Chicago this month and we won't hear about it. And if we don't hear about all THOSE murders, they're just out of site, out of mind. Those lives are just as important... but sadly, they are not being highlighted by anyone.
