My memory of that time is a little fuzzy, but do you think it made any difference, knowing what has happened since, and compared to what is being proposed today? Will it be the same outcome of granting amnesty, then over the next several decades more illegals sneaking in and repeating this process again? What is a good solution? Thanks.chickaree wrote: You are forgetting Ronald Reagan's reform back in 86.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/07/ ... HW20110725Responding to Obama's remarks, Texas Republican Congressman Lamar Smith said any offer of amnesty to the undocumented would "further bury us in debt" by making illegal immigrants eligible for health, education and other benefits.
"Amnesty would prevent many Americans from getting jobs since millions of illegal immigrants will become eligible to work legally in the United States," said Smith, who chairs the House of Representatives' Judiciary Committee. "The president should enforce immigration laws, not give those who have broken them a free pass."

This bumper sticker wouldn't even be a source of outrage if it weren't for the larger issue at hand of why we try to continue to half-heartedly enforce deportation, and have ridiculous rules about guest/work visas, all of which makes immigration reform relevant in my opinion.
