Someone who served their time does not need to be pardoned, they are already free?

I think the irony here is that the primary suggested solution to criminals shooting people in public is to make laws that require the criminals to register and identify their guns better.

Again, since Obama;s primary job is that of a marketing agent, this was not a good move. This is evident by the fact that it is being discussed at all.

But we all know the regs around gun control are just to shut people up and calm the media - with so few people dying and so many other issues, this is not about making a real difference, it is about elections and new stories.

a pardon restores rights such as voting, owning firearms, etc.

A presidential pardon is intended to correct a gross miscarriage of justice. It is very important for a president to publicly state the reasons for a public action such as a presidential pardon.

I do not know that a pardon is the same as an expunge.
