Dixie Chicks: 10 Years Later

A friend of mine on FB pointed out tonight that it's been 10 years since the infamous comment by Natalie Maines that started the downfall of the group. I couldn't believe it had been that long, and I still miss their music terribly. For such an innocuous comment, far paler in comparison to vitriol I've read in recent years, their careers were ruined, their lives threatened ...and it's a damn shame. In honor of that anniversary, I wanted to share one of my favorites of theirs - one that speaks to me, to my journey, my heart, my life. I respect those who forever choose to take

The whole Dixie Chicks backlash took me by surprise.....they, like all Americans, are entitled to their opinions and have the freedom to express those opinions. I too miss their music, and their so often stark and true lyrics. And you are right SC, what they said doesn't even come close to the type of comments we have heard by many famous people over the last 4 years about the current president.

Or the many other famous people who spoke out against George Bush. As the Chicks said in an interview, they got it worse because they were in a more highly-conservative-supported industry. It's an individual's right to not support an artist because they don't agree with their political views, but for the radio stations to ban their music completely (and many of them still don't play them), and for them to receive death threats...the lack of perspective and hypocrisy staggers at least this logical person. As someone who values and appreciates non-cookie-cutter music, the loss of theirs was saddening. I hope they will return someday.

Who?

"During a London concert ten days before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, lead vocalist Maines said, "we don't want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States [George W. Bush] is from Texas".[1] The positive reaction to this statement from the British audience contrasted with the boycotts that ensued in the U.S., where "the band was assaulted by talk-show conservatives",[2] while their albums were discarded in public protest.[2]

As of 2012, the Dixie Chicks had won 13 Grammy Awards, including five in 2007 for Taking the Long Way—which received the Grammy Award for Album of the Year—and "Not Ready to Make Nice", a single from that album. By February 2013, with 30.5 million certified albums sold,[3] and sales of 27 million albums in the U.S. alone, they had become the top selling all-female band, and biggest selling country group in the U.S. during the Nielsen SoundScan era.[4]"

No one denied they had the right to say it but there were repercussions especially considering their customer base. They seem to have recovered by going more pop.

Just as they have the right to speak out. Americans have a right to disagree with their position. Seems to me....Their careers have managed in spite of the remarks as Bob pointed out.
That is one of my issues with the last 4 years. If you do something or say something.....take responsibility for it. Don't push the blame off elsewhere.

edited to add......(not that I think it will matter) but a good example of this kind of behavior is the constant remarks that some behaviors are justified by other behavior from the other side. It matters little what others do. We are all responsible solely for our own behavior.

Don't try and take away the "They Started it" defense of obnoxious behavior. This board would come to a screeching halt.

I think for some on the right....this message does hit home and many have tried to raise the bar on discourse. I think a couple on the left have also taken this message to heart and done the same.

Well at least when people critisize Bush, they don't have to worry about being labelled a racist, even if the critic is black.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.
