Denver Post: American Pets Outnumbered Children Since 2006

Looks like people are choosing to have low maintenance pets over bringing new kids into the world. Think this is a bad trend? Personally the wife and I chose to not have kids but have had a number of cats and dogs in our two decades of marriage. Should the government encourage people to have more children? Or is it better for the planet for populations to decline?

Looks like the pet generation will need to find a way for dogs and cats to pay into Social Security.

Having kids is hard. I think it is good that this has become a thoughtful decision rather than just a given.

The Social Security question will be something to consider, especially with people living longer. One worker supporting one person on Social Security doesn't work out well for the payer.
Should we do like Euro countries and make maternity leave paid and mandatory? Or increase the tax benefits for having children?

Social Security will have to be restructured once we baby boomers have passed on. We skew the numbers. We just need to make sure we pay for ourselves so we don't leave a crippling debt for our kids and grandkids to pay.

Too late I'm afraid. Our worthless government can't even reduce the rate of spending GROWTH (without panic in the WH), not to mention reducing the actual debt itself. It's gonna be at least 20 trillion by the time Obama is out of office and if another tax and spend Dem becomes pres. after that.......

That's up to us in the Republican party. Of we can field a candidate that doesn't come off as either crazy, stupid or disconnected we should win easily. I've been dismayed by the quality of our recent candidates. The good people get eclipsed by the whackos and drop out early in the primary.

Who would you have picked out of the primary choices? Huntsman? To a large extent the press makes a mountain out.of a molehill of for any misstatement.

Interesting thread shift

Who, in their right mind, would actually attempt to become POTUS?

Unless you can come up with an answer to that, we are left with what we currently have.

Time to tax the non-breeders more? You aren't doing your part for the nation by raising little taxpayers! Fertility rates are half what they were in the 1960's.
