Thoughts? Reasonable or hypocritical? Do they have to pass an ordinance for this, or can they just post no open carry allowed?

Jefferson County may bar citizens from openly carrying firearms in some county buildings.

Sheriff Ted Mink on Tuesday asked the Board of County Commissioners to consider passing an ordinance restricting guns from certain county buildings because, in recent weeks, people have brought firearms into his office and to a Department of Human Services building.

Current county ordinance allows citizens to openly carry their guns into the buildings, but Mink said employees reported feeling uneasy and, in some cases, reported that citizens became confrontational when asked to leave their guns in their vehicles.

"It's not to take away anyone's Second Amendment rights," Mink said. "But in some cases, it helps to remove that visual sight of a gun in situations that can be kind of volatile."

I have a CCW permit but I don't see the need to open carry, and the only place I do is in Jefferson the town, not the county. I think it is fine to outlaw it in public buildings, don't need to make a situation tense, or alarm the soccer moms.

I suppose if the sheriff and his deputies are willing to give up their open carry in public buildings to avoid intimidating the citizenry, then the citizens should be willing to give up open carry to avoid intimidating their public servants. That sounds fair to me.

"Law enforcement and security officers would be exempt from the ordinance."

And it doesn't apply to concealed carry, making this merely a "feel-good" measure for the employees who are uncomfortable. What's the point?

The point, as is the case with the rest of the gun laws passed recently, is to make people feel like something is being done despite the reality that nothing actually is being done. If people feel better because they think something has been done that's all that really matters, isn't it?

Of course in this instance, there would be something being done. Removal of a safety hazard from crowded areas.

Removal of a so called "safety hazard" that was in plain sight at least. "Safety hazards" concealed by one's clothing would still be allowed, with the proper permit of course.

So you agree that open carry guns are a safety hazard. CCW would also be a safety hazard, but since the firearm must be secured out of view, it would be a much less hazard than simply carrying in a location where it could be bumped or easily seized by another. Plus at least with CCW, there is at least a modicum of training required.

Your quote states, " Current county ordinance allows citizens to openly carry their guns into the buildings,".

In answer to your question, do I really need to answer your question?
