What if the Next President is Even Worse?

Be careful what you wish for.

Bush and Obama shouldn't worry you nearly as much as the next president.

Or the one after that.

Think about it, liberals
. What if there is a president in your lifetime who is more conservative than Bush? What if that commander in chief is empowered, as were Bush and Obama, by a national tragedy and a compliant Congress?

Your guy Obama has armed a president-turned-zealot with dangerous powers and precedents.

Think about it, conservatives
. It may be maddening to listen to Obama tie himself into knots over the balance between liberty and freedom, but what if the next Democratic president sees no limit on a commander in chief's powers? What if he or she doesn't give a whit about offending the mainstream media?

For centuries the three branches have fought for their share of power, legislative, executive, and the courts. In my lifetime, I have seen the power of the executive branch increase and I don't like it. Checks and balances were made for a reason, and like MG points out, if we get next time a scenario with a strong executive and a rubber stamping Congress, I could see a lot of damage. Look at communities with only one party like Detroit and Chicago, corruption, and a compliant press.

The general idea in that quoted material above is certainly a possible (and frightful) scenario... and I think you have seen pockets of people starting to wonder if there is really any connection left between "we the people" and those that lead. I've always wondered if our constitution ever really foresaw the possibility of a government that has becomes so elite and top heavy, combined with a population of now over 300 million people.

One of the reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire was that they had too many people under their governmental sphere, no one at the top listening to the Empires concerns and they spent themselves out on supporting so many people on various welfare programs... example "In the Roman Empire, the first emperor Augustus provided the 'congiaria' or corn dole for citizens who could not afford to buy food. Social welfare was enlarged by the Emperor Trajan.[1] Trajan's program brought acclaim from many, including Pliny the Younger.[2]"

Is that happening to us... and at the same time we see a more insular and power grabbing government in DC?
